I grew up in a Punjabi environment, so am more fluent in Punjabi than Urdu. This problem will have to be addressed at some point.
Can understand Gujrati, but can't speak it. Can read Spanish, but am out of practice for speaking.
Broken French.

Fluent in: Urdu, Punjabi, Pashto and English... oh and Mandarin. As well as sign and body language.

Broken bits of: Farsi, Arabic, Thai, Polish, Romanian, Greek, German, Hungarian, Russain, Cantonese, Turkish a little Japanese, some good French, Spanish and a little Hebrew.... Oh and yes I also learnt basic Latin as well.

As you can see i love learning any Lingo i can get my tongue round.

El Topo Sir I am far from a babel fish, one should just take a moment to speak to someone. To be honest it's easier to learn a language today than ever before. When i was young i picked up words by talking to people in or from far off places... nowadays one can swap slang and even briefly woo foriegn friends from an online chat room, without having to even pack a bag.

Faris, you have a point, but you're still being too modest. More exposure to a language is meaningless if one is not prepared to put the effort in to pay attention, listen, and retain.

Cant write more than a sentence in urdu and can write hindi very well :P

PS : for ppl saying hind and urdu are almost the same. No they aint. Pure hindi is way way differen then urdu.

Is standard Bengali the same as Dhaka Bengali or do u mean the 'posh' Bengali they speak on the news?

On a sliding scale I'm fluent in speaking English, French, German, Bengali.. ok-ish in Urdu.. and can get by (ie hold a conversation but not discuss current affairs lol) in Arabic and Swedish.. If people speak Punjabi, Hindi or any Latin language I can usually get the gist of what they're saying (did Latin at school for 7 yrs so that comes in handy)..

Some of those languages I can't read or write in tho :( and being honest if a family member speaks to me in another language I tend to be lazy and just answer in English..
