I think today’s people are more individualistic, not necessary selfish.

Actually, in the desi mentality, often, the selfish motive begins with the thought of having someone take care of you in the old age.
I have a seen a trend among desi couples, as soon as they migrate to the west, they pop one out.
Deep down many are hoping, he (yep, he) will grow up to be an athelete or someone who makes millions in a year, and voila. . .

That's just a euphemism for selfish, LI. :) However, I do believe that its a variety of factors, and that our health, immune systems and levels of fertility have a lot to do with women baring fewer kids.

How is having 1 child over 5 selfish? On the contrary, having lots of children is selfish. Planet just can’t sustain that level of population.

WC, not all desi parents have such expectations from their kids. We're 3 sisters and my parents have always wanted us to stand on our own feet, and be independent and they say time and again that they dont want anything (financially) from us.

LI who says the planet is underpopulated? Its all lies I tell you. Just because China and India are overpopulated doesnt mean the whole world is. Infact, Europe and Africa are underpopulated.
We need to produce more Muslims :D

Why are fertility levels falling? Have there been any studies on that? That's worrisome.
My prof did a quick survey in some class of mine, a quarter of the class or more indicated that they did not want to have any children.

Stress levels, gm foods, our diets, lifestyles, side-effects of vaccines and medication, the amount of plastic used in food storage and the like.

Oh and don't forget the effects of contraceptives like the pill. Stick to traditional methods my friends.

Ive been wondering that too....
I hve relatives born and raised in Pakistan who had miscarriages, stillborns, and infertility troubles as well. But there's also an equal amount who get pregnant every five minutes. However, my mother was teling me that life here was more difficult, the joint family system was gone and she had two young children, an infant really, to take care of, as well as doing the housework/cooking and helping my dad out at his store. She could have taken it easier if she was in Pakistan but then again there's no poitn in thinking "what ifs."
I think both generations, ours and our grandparents, are/were very difficult and have our own hardships to deal with.
