How many functions??

hi,

I was wondering if someone was to get married in Pakistan, how many functions would there typically be before and after the wedding…Because in the UK there are mainly 3 which are mehndi, nikah, walima…Are weddings in Pakistan more fun?

I am asking because my brother in law is getting married in Pakistan next year…

Re: How many functions??

More or less, its the same everywhere.

Re: How many functions??

Yeah, I think it depends more on your family than on the location. My parents have a big social circle, so there were formal dholkis and dawats after the main wedding events in addition.

Re: How many functions??

dholaks (depending on the family--how many), mayoon, mehndi (s), baraat, valima, maklava...other minor parties ppl create like dance/song/ghazal nights etc.....

personally, I found that pakistani wedding r mosre festive--guess cuz there r a million relatives and I WISH mine were there

what are maklava's?

In Pakistan def!

The best thing about gettn married in Pakistan is you can b rerally extravagant because everythin is so much cheaper!
So you can hav fireworks displays, and various entertainment..etc etc..
Gettin married in england can be fun aswell if you hav lots of family around!..and If you can afford to..

In Bristol we do have dholki/sangeet for about 10 days before the wedding usually in the dulhan/dulhas house or in the garden under a marquee..then you have the usual mehndi, baraat and walima but you miss alot of the traditions that they do back home..Because we're punjabi we do funny stuff like carrying pots on your head and walking in the streets singing and having cussing matches!!..you jus cant do tht stuff here!

Re: How many functions??

The downside of getn married back hme is..if the weather is too hot it ruins the wedding..ur make up melts!..and also ur 50 million relatives will jack all ur make up and destroy it and get u to get them all ready cause ur frm england u jus know what ur doing..apparently!
And everyone is in ur face ALL THE TIME.

Re: How many functions??

^lol!

that is very true.. and if the bride tries to do anything or have anything done her way, she's not even allowed to because she should be all covered up, hiding in a corner till her shadi day.

Or if you are there for three weeks, and the weather is really pleasant so no one thinks to waterproof the tent for the dinner (that you are forced to have elsewhere because of the stupid no-food rule) and the only day it rains is your wedding day and it is pouring and pouring and you are desperately trying to keep your beautiful red gharara from the mud...

Re: How many functions??

In our family, we usually have about 3 dholki events, mayoun, mehndi, nikah, baraat & valima.. not always, but yeah, generally.

Oh and what is a makhlava?

Re: How many functions??

Maklava is when the bride returns home the day after the valima to spend the night at her parents house. We don't have that in our family--usually the couple is on their way to the honeymoon!

Re: How many functions??

^ what she is.

oy vey. that would be so stressful!

lol, specially if you spent 3 lakhs on it from a designer! :D

Re: How many functions??

after the valima the bride and groom go with the girls family and stay in her home (or a place they have for them), the next day when the grooms family comes to get the couple--that is the maklava:) just another party with song, dance and yummy FOOD:)

Made more stressful by people asking me how many pateelees (pots and pans) I've licked as I'm desperately trying to shield my clothes.
