There are two Riwayaahs mentioned by scholars. One school of thought is 3 days, another is of 40 days.

Quran does not specify the number of days Hazrat Younus was in fish' belly . In Jew traditions it is mentioned that he remained there for 3 days and 3 nights.

Yes I read that online that it was for 3 days 3 nights, however, it must be from a Jewish source because I recall from my Islamic studies in Musjid that it was 40 days. Just wanted to know because his dua is a powerful one, wanted to guage how long it took him to get it accepted.

Thank you for bringing this topic of great interest. Let me share something which I learned. Certainly when I read Quran or come across such references, I look for spiritual aspect in it rather.
The reason this incidence is true and is captured in hebrew references is two fold, one to tell people of that time that when prophets bear hard ship, they shoulnt be left alone and their hardship does not reflect their claim to be false but was in fact the test for the followers. Secondly this incidence was shown later as correlation sign for Jesus.
When Jesus [as] was captured by Jews and it was decided that he will be put on cross, the following words were given as sign.

“and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Mt 12:40)

this is a very powerful statement, revealing several gems of wisdom.
Jonah [Hadhrat Yonus] was swallowed by a big fish and was delivered alive after 3 days and he recovered to normal.
Similarly Jesus [as] survived crucifixion [as promised by Allah] and was delivered alive to normal after 3 days of hiding in the tomb, made by Joseph of Arimethia. His wounds were treated by the famous ointment made by Nicodemus.

Today the shroud of turin reflects his body impression made by those spices.
This dua of hadhrat Jounus [as], which was saved for all the generations, is so immense that there is no parallel.

Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, mentioned in one of his writings that this prayer is so strong that even if someone get stuck in the belly of fish, this prayer will definitely pull him out.
At another place he mentioned, about this pray having “Ism Aazam”, the dua with an immense power.

i have listen this from my Mosque imam that he remain in fish belly for about 40 days,,, And ALLAH (SWT) KEEP HIM ALIVE THERE,,
