^ for someone straight out of an undergrad degree, you're looking at 6 to 7 years... some Univs offer direct admission into Ph.D. and a Masters degree can be completed intermittently if the required coursework is completed. In the U.S. and Canada, a Masters degree is usually a prerequisite for admission into a Ph.D.
That’s what I said… for someone with an undergrad degree, it takes 6 to years to finish a doctorate inclusive with an MPhil / other Research based Masters degree.
Umar Talib:haha... I guess you haven't met ppl who're pursuing Ph.D.s ... 5 years is very common in the U.S. and Canada... like I said, the average is between 4 to 5 years tending more towards 5.
Nope, thats not the case. My mami is doing PHD in chemistry these days in Germany. Its a 3 year thingy. A mentor of mine, is doing on-line phd in Comp. Science. through some US programme. Its 2,5 years I think.... depending on credits...
I recall there are a few uni in US, that does not require a MA to do phd. My far off relative moved away from parents to persue it.
The longest phd-period was an Indian lady I helped to open a ethnic-team of Psychologists.....she did phd in ten years. But I guess, there was language barrier and other stuff too. She teaches Psychology at uni now.
Inshallah rehman, my own aim is to do PHD as well. And Im in Europe ;-)
^ yes… a lot depends on what type of research preparation the candidate has already undergone as part of their prior graduate studies.
As I said earlier, in Europe, a Ph.D. is almost always 3 years.
This wiki is pretty elaborate on how the requirements and expectations are different in every country. Sounds like in Canada, it is by far the longest duration - shucks!!
Good luck with your own Ph.D. Pathani - being in Europe… you’re lucky too!
What program/stream are you planning to pursue?
Most likely ph.d in health science.
Please pray, I dont change my line of prof.

I was thinking, I gave you a sincere advice and you posted such a lousy response.
You cant pay yourself OUT of ignorance, dude. So whatever you spent on BA or bsc,
drop the MA part, obviously education cant bring you any light.

takes em longer to finish high school too.
naah - we're just more thorough and demand more advanced knowledge through our institutions ma man!
and the lack of cutting edge research indicates that uss thorigh knowledge ka aap acchar banatay hain.
but serously, why is it that we dont see much innovation in canada or major global companies coming from canada? diff topic though. can cover somewhere else
Fraudz, you got a valid point.
The thing is, in most European countries edu is for free.
In Canada and US, it has become a huge Business.
Thus longer it takes and costs, well, unies EARN well
