Seriously, it all depends on waht the situation is..there's no one right answer, if you can give us a little bit of background information, it would really help :)
If you wait too long you wont even have to tell them, they will already know..

If it's bad news, it can wait... but not too long.
If it's good news, tell 'em right away.
If it's about telling someone how you feel, wait long enough to know you're sure. After that, tell them. :-p
