How important is it? Is it more important then good grades? I was talking to this class fellow and he was saying that an average student from a big name University has so many more job options then a high performer from a not so well known university. What are your views?
Re: How important is the "Brand" Name of the University?
people are going to too much.
Remember that, If you love what you do than its not important at all what uni. you go to.

So you are saying the :brand name" isnt as important? Personally I dont know if I love what I want to do as of yet...achievement oriented is what I am but passionate about the major..Im not sure yet:)
Re: How important is the "Brand" Name of the University?
Brand name uni. does help you getting first job. Thats about it.
passion takes you far.
Re: How important is the "Brand" Name of the University?
Depends on what field you plan on going into.
If you want to go into banking, finance, etc., then I agree...an average student at a prestigious university is probably better off (in terms of recruitment opportunities and name recognition) than a good student at a lesser known school. If you plan on applying to graduate or professional school though, I think excellent grades & test scores at a mediocre university will get you further than average grades at prestigious institution...

Interesting ..I have to think about that because I really want to go for a graduate degree after this one.

not only does a better name make it easy for you to get your foot in the door, but usually at a higher level, in a better companym at a better salary ..usually, not always but usually..
now from that point onwards the trajectory can vary based on effort, luck, company performance, industry, network etc.

Actually its the other way around
Not only big companies do recruiting seminars in big name univ, but the professors get grants from big corporations and the students who are part of the research work have good chance of getting a job in those companies.
for second job onwards, big name univ. does not matter that much..
but MIT or any other big name on your resume does make a differnce

I remember you did some research of the universities last year when I was getting started. thanks again..I am just thinking is it better to switch or maybe wait till grad school.
It is an awfully expensive investment though..I just dont know if thats worth it...or as you say on ROI capital.

It is generally seen that Big names get you better salaries even for your first job. And then you have better chances to grow within the company if you have some Ivy League stamp on your credentials. I know a friend who was selected for a job where he fit well by the direct manager and his VP as well. But then the sr. vp did not approve him just for the reason that he was not from an Ivy League. It was very disappointing especially when he had made it through all the way at this big company.

Entry level to junior management positions:
Depends on how big the brand is. If you show the top 10 in the US or top 20 globally, even mediocre grades will get you better jobs. 'Better' can mean better employer, easier hire and more pay. More pay can mean as much as triple compared to a run of the mill college.
Middle management, late twenties through may be till 45 to 50:
What college matters a lot less; your accomplishments, connections/network and creativity matters. In this age, if you are thinking about these things, you are probably not a dunce settling for clerical smoothness to retirement!
also note, the top 15% rankers from top 20 univs will reach middle management about 5 to 10 years earlier than others (due to a head start) but that doesn't mean further progress is assured.
Upper management:
Pure creativity, networking and acknowledged (as opposed to proven) track record is all that matters (except in very select areas such as niche law practice, thematic architecture...)
Freak genius can breakout anytime anywhere and there's no pattern to it though
Re: How important is the "Brand" Name of the University?
But if the question is one of whether to get a grad degree or not, it should not even be a question. Even the run of the grad degree (in a decent major) will more than quadruple your lifelong earnings compared to going at it without a grad degree.
Re: How important is the "Brand" Name of the University?
Brand names are important in everything even when it comes to universities.A top company will look for a top university/program.With that said, it doesn't mean that a graduate from a not so well known university should pack up his boots and go to Tibet.Passion and drive are just as important. People who rely on their program to get them to succeed will only go so far.Like somebody said, it helps in getting that first job but beyond that, it's what you make of it.

Is that your personal opinion or from research. It is pretty interesting. I am contemplating this dilema either to transfer or wait till graduate level.
