Re: How important is it for the wife to be working?
^ thats true but if someone has a degree/professional accr. it is better to work to keep in touch with what one has learned. I totally agree with raising kids, running a household is much harder and totally worthwhile but then whats the use of putting all the time, effort and money into something one is not going to get any benefit for ones' self or for others.
When one gets education the main goal is not just to have a good life for ourselves or to be more educated parents, one has moral responsibility to the society and ppl around us too, this is just my opinion. When I went back to work after a year of mat leave I tried everything to somehow work part time, but my job was such that I had to do fulltime or quit, we had a very very comfortable paycheque from my husband's job, but for my own sake,* I always worked.*
Even now my situation is such that I can't work, and can't thank allah enough that he gave me this oppertunity to focus on my son but I am working towards couple of certifications and enrolled in graduate program and helping hubby whereever I can.
Re: How important is it for the wife to be working?
Husband has a good steady job with a good income. wife's parents have money saved for her but is not working. now, i know husband is the sole provider but is it really that important that the wife works. what if the wife has difficulty in finding a job even though she is educated. hmmm....
Does the wife want to work?
Does the husband want to be her financial provider?
Can they agree on the roles each would be playing? If they don't, they need to sit down and figure it out.
I personally think that it is best to not be dependent on anyone, especially when you ARE capable of taking care of yourself. If you're refusing to do it when you're capable, you're just lazy. No sympathies from me. (Unless of course if there are other valid reasons.)
Difficulty in finding a job is temporary. It will go away with trying.
Re: How important is it for the wife to be working?
whats the point of studying for 16 years and then sitting at home infront of tv all day? if she have to sit at home at the end then why did she waste money on her education, parents could have saved more than 10,000pounds then.
Although I am fortunate to not have to make the choise atm, I would choose work over being a housewife since I know I would be useless at the latter and therefore I applaud any woman who is a housewife because it is a very difficult and demanding to keep everyone happy and have a beautiful home. As a child, I enjoyed coming home where I knew my mum had made tea and wasn't expected to do anything other than my homework, and wish so many times I could be as good as her at keeping home. I see many female colleagues at work who are at work till 6 in the evening, and feel for their children who do not see their mothers and do some of the normal things such as having a mother wait at the school gates - but understand that some woman do not have the luxury of having the choice to stay at home.
Studying is not only a tool for obtaining a job; the knowledge gained is a gift in itself and can be used in many ways in life and not necessarily in work environment.

I have seen my mum working as a teacher and then started her own school. but she was always there when i needed her. Its just because of her that I am where, where a person from a family like mine could never be. its because of her I realized the difference between a guy brought up by a woman who does not know anything about the real world and a woman who is in practical/professional field and the way she teaches you how to compete with upcoming things :)
at the end, things end up on your personal preferences .. ..
I don't say that my wife HAS to work but i would prefer :) ..
Re: How important is it for the wife to be working?
An educated women sitting at home is wasting her intelligence..HOWEVER its different for each woman and its THEIR decision and THEIR choice to decide if they deem it to be important enough
