Assalam O Aalaikom everybody,
How are you? I want to know how complicated a University is. Technically, I am a slow reader and will I be able to make accomblishments in University? Do we get enough time to read and understand the concept while slow reading? I am looking forward to hearing answer from you members.

Remember procastination, do avoid that because the allotted time per semester is less and whole lots to study.
Being a slow reader, is not the criterion the Important point is do you Understanding the Basic concepts, when you studying any subject.
Once you crack the concept, believe me you will amazed yourself, and contemplate that your reading method is changed.
But remember, Practise does make a man perfect.

I barely read anything in Uni and I passed, Alhumdulillah. Nothing to be proud of but the fact is that had I read slower than normal it would have been an improvement from what I was doing. Therefore, yes, you can still do well as long as you understand the concepts.

I hope there's no physical or health problem with you. If you are a normal person, then you can make yourself faster. You would have heard that someone ill got well after therapy and treatment. Same way you can make your brain faster by reading more and more. When we don't use our brain more, it gets kind of rusted. Just work hard, you'll be fine inshallah.
And also learn time management skills and eliminating procrastination. I remember, there was a thread on study skills and i posted an article/presentation. If you are interested, i will post it again.

SuperMe you mentioned before that English is not your second language, is that a reason you might be a slow reader?
Some peopel are just naturally slow at reading, doesnt make em any dumber or slower I believe..I know for me, repetition works, if i hear it over and over and over, i finally get the concept..hearing it for hte first time rarely works for me..

Undergrad History degree is pretty easy. I had like 6 classes a week.

Dont worry about being a slow reader.
The whole concept of university in your first year is overwhelming! You need to relax and stay ahead of the game.
I am not saying one should study non stop, but try your best to skim the reading material before class. Remember everyone is different, and I too am a very slow reader and writer. You learn the skill of reading textbooks and just focus on the important issues and your eyes will only pick up the important things.. therefore giving you the opportunity to read fast = read more.
Some people are fans of highlighting textbooks. I always did it, but just the big words and processes that I needed to know.

UNIVERSITY education is a belssing.
a US educator and theorist from nyu, Neil Postman, once said something like this:
students come in the schools with question marks, & they go out from schools, as periods.
univ or grad school ed refines u.
u might have to play catch up, but if u are in school because u want to be, and it is a privilege to afford grad school, work towards the highest degree of u r
field - then u will also put in genuine effort, real hard work and inshaAllah accomplish what u came there for - earning a good grade B.A./BSc., M.A./ MSc. or Ph.D.

Offcourse English is my second language. I was just feeling stress due to hearing University is extremely hard which makes us do much reading. Jazakallah Khair everybody for answering.
Two question now:
Don't we have to read deeply? If we slow, then don't we retain more information?

Uni is easy my friend...thats if you actually put the work in...your issue is that you are a slow reader...thats not a problem if you complete the reading...the danger would be if you struggle to comprehend what you read...
If you out in the neccesary work uni is fine...and you dont have ****loads of work to do...its just you have other distractions...
This isnt the case if your studying something like medicine, dentistry or engineering...they actually have ****loads of work to do...

As for retaining more...well yeh isnt it obvious...when i read i make notes...thats slow...reading something doesnt do anything...read relevant bits again and make notes...

oh dont worry dude, not a big deall....
what I recommend you do is that everyday...just go over the notes or the material you covered in all ur classes that day...it shudnt take more than 2 hours.
but if you do that EVERYDAY..just two hours...you will always be prepared for quizzez...and will retain more information than u cud ever by studying the night before your finals. after those two hours or watever...you can have some time for chillin too...sounds pretty good to me!!

then you dont have to worry about univ. being tough...because you would know your stuff...which will give you confidence aswell. That really helps too!!
So go ahead and try tht and let us know if it works.
you will feel very satisfied after you do this for a few weeks and will have a much less stressful life inshAllah:)
