It took M-Aamir 14 Matches to achieve the same goal. Asif, Waqar and Shabir Ahmed took 10 matches each, Ajmal took 11 matches, Kaneria 12 and Saqlain 13.
Something note able is that a good bowler can take more matches than an ordinary bowler to get 50 wickets. e.g Kaneria had to fight with other ordinary bowlers to get his 50 wickets so he took 12 matches and Saqlain had to fight Shoaib Akhter, Wasim Akram and at times waqar to get more wickets.
Now Philander has Steyn and Morkle who r pretty good bowlers in this modern era. I am impressed by how he is getting so many wickets while other good bowlers around him. This is definitely best start of international career by any test cricketer I have seen.
He is having a dream start of his career. Every game SA plays, I see 4..5..6 wickets written in front of his name but his career is just to short right now to pass any judgement.
We had so many short lived wonders in cricket before who either disappeared or did not live to the hyper they created themselves such as Grame hick, Mendis etc
Although he has played all test matched in favorable condition( SA and NZL) but 50 Wickets in 7 matches is just mind boggling... With Styen, Morkel, de Lange, Lsotsobe and Philander future of South African bowling attach is pretty safe...
SA has amazing culture...they never felt loss of Donald and Pollock..someone always steps up..
In December SL was Philandered, in this match NZ was Philandered, in 2nd innings it is Morkel who took all 6 wickets (so far): NZ 167/6, looks like 2nd inning is Morkel versus New Zealand.
