Well, these things are common everywhere - not only in US.
Remember the cartoon issue. As far as US is concerned, I heard news about a brochure in US that talks against muslims (I don't have details about it).
Then an election candidate (originally from Vietnam) in Orange County in California talked negative about Muslims. He lost though because he talked negative about latinos as well.
The best way to resolve these issues or to inform non-muslims about Islam is to have unity which we lack badly - as a Muslim nation.
In US, there are tons of Islamic organizations and they're doing a good job or as much good as possible for them. If these organizations join their forces together and work like one strong team, they will be so much influential. But again, we as Muslims lack it badly and we are paying the price.

Well it is happening but not at the scale that would make it a topic of daily discussion both in public / work settings and in muslim gathering as a source of concern. In general the world today is not a freindly place for muslims mostly because of a degraded sense of security.
On a side note, this, I believe is a blessing in disguise as well. In the past, when we were in a false sense of security we were not really focussed towards Allah SWT. Now we pray more for His help and protection because we feel a lackof security.
