How Far Do You Hunt?

Have you ever considered looking for work in another city/country?
How far did you look?
How did you go about it?

Re: How Far Do You Hunt?

I did ... I think its very important to get to know the culture of the new country ... it can help so much in understanding the language , the people and how to present oneself for the role .

Finding a job before moving is an absolute must ... and if you are moving with your family then finding a place to live is important ...

When looking for a new role abroad, the best thing to do is to find recruiters who will help you understand the market and get you a job ... Often looking at that country's newspapers gives one a good idea of what the market is like and the job salaries ...

Online searches on places like Monster and many other more area specific websites can be great help too .

Once the job is secured , its easy to move , rest of the things are manageable , eg converting the driving license , arranging transport, finding the right schools for kids etc ...

As long as you have the provision the world is your oyster and it is better to take your family with you wherever you go.

Re: How Far Do You Hunt?

I've contemplating my fortunes in the US, were I did my post-doc, but I've chosen to return to my home country - Israel. I don't think I'm going to look for another country in the future. This is where I and my family belong.

Re: How Far Do You Hunt?

i've never experienced the agony of job searching...alHamdolillah :) my transition from studies to work was seamless and very smooth, mA

Re: How Far Do You Hunt?

Didn't I move to US ? So I do not care where it is as long as I have a job.

Re: How Far Do You Hunt?

Open to move anywhere really for the right opportunity.
depending on how big the sacrifice is, the rewards have to be bigger
moving within the region is one, from midwest to east coast is a bigger change
overseas depending on country, how attractive living there is and how little or much alien it is. how much you will have to adjust to live there..

add on the premiums for all that.

I had head hunters chasing me from middle east asking me to relocate for 20% more, as if that is worth it. I told them, talk upwards of 75% more and we can talk.

But alhumdulillah that was because i was okay in my job, had things been tough, i would have done whatever was needed. i have techie pals who had job issues here and moved to KSA while the family is still here.

so on the 20%, its not worth the hassle of selling the place, relocating, leaving behind a social circle and all that, how about spouse's career? even if I am the primary breadwinner..is the overseas offer significantly above the two incomes? and when u come back in certain number of years u have to restart everything, it is however a little different if you are on a global assignment from your company and u are in china for 5 years.

HR ppl here would know that even in those cases repatriation is tough and people are often not able to adjust back in the office in their home country, Many reasons for that which I won't bore you with here.

Re: How Far Do You Hunt?

very valid points shared by X2 ... that is no doubt one of the major concerns when people are offered a role in a different country ...
