I live in Toronto and my boyfriend and I are planning to get married in about 2 years. We won’t be able to start planning the wedding until baat paaki (next year), and he thinks that planning a wedding in about 9 months is fine, whereas I’d like to have at least a year, if not longer, to be able to book the venue/makeup artist/photographer that I really want.
What do you think is a reasonable time to start booking things like venue, makeup artist/photography/videography/getting dress made/buying jewellery/decor/DJ and all the other prep work needed for the wedding? If one is planning on getting married in the summer (which is the busy season), are prices higher and do you need to book more in advance to get what you want?
What was your experience? What time frame did you have to plan your wedding and were you able to get everything you wanted as a result?
Re: How early to starting making bookings for your wedding?
It depends on how much you want certain vendors - I tried to book a photographer for an anniversary party six months in advance (I thought that would be plenty of time) & it wasn't - all the decent photographers had already been booked for June weddings a year in advance and no one we liked was available for our party. We lucked out because we found someone who had just started their own firm & had open dates (& had a good portfolio of previous work), but it was very difficult.
In a city like Toronto where there is a lot of demand the few good make up artists, halls, photogaphers, DJ who know how to do the kind of events we like, I think you probably need to give yourself a year to plan. If you give yourself a little extra time it just means that you can spread everything out a bit more & not be so rushed when you do start, so I don't see the downside of starting early.

yup :)
its always better to start early, but remember, thinking toooooo much about your wedding makes it stressful. even then in the end, somethings are not in ur control :p
but since you have a lot of time before ur big day, i suggest u do all the paper work and other little details for now, and the bookings after ur official "baat-pakki"
Re: How early to starting making bookings for your wedding?
The gori brides in general contact me anywhere from 3 months to one year ahead of time. The desis are usually last minute or couple of months in advance at the most. I would say 6 months is a good idea.

Yeah good advice! I've already started harassing my bf to get the baak pakki as soon as possible so I can book the vendors that I really really want, and he is like "wth???"
I think I do need to calm down. I already have a big list of vendors that I am interested in, so I know that as soon as I have the baat pakki I can start booking, rather than wasting time having to do research and stuff. I need to stop putting all my hopes on a particular vendor and just remind myself that no matter who I end up booking, it will be my day and I'll enjoy it!!
But yeah I like to plan things obsessively so this is hard :)

So if I start bookings for a summer wedding one year in advance, I should be pretty good to go?
