If you are planning your trip for the summer or even Fall this year, when would you ideally make reservations? Especially flight reservations?
I know that at some tourist attractions the good hotels etc. go pretty soon so early the better but air fare fluctuates. Once or maybe twice I have had issues were I made reservations 4-5 months in advance and then the fares got cheaper 2 months later.

Generally booking air flights earlier helps, as your agent can book the lowest class fares. Cheap seats go quickly. Prices are announced quite early and won't change generally. If they go down, generally you can cancel and rebook. I don't think flights can be booked earlier than 6 months before the first date of travel. After that its all fair game.

Ha!!! I caught them red handed. 
I bought this ticket for my San Fran/Jose trip in May for $304.something, back in February. I felt it was a bit high considering I was making reservations almost four months in advance but I let it go.
So, yesterday my cousin said he wants to join me and I thought, ok let me see how much the same flight is. Today the exact same flight is $223.
Its through United, I gave them a call and after talking to their automated system for ten minutes then the customer support guy for another five, I finally got a voucher back. Urgh!!
