How long does the IVF treatment take.
Is it true people can choose the sex of their baby or is this a myth.
How come a high percent of people end up with multiple babies with this treatment.
This is me being nosey!
Thanks

Re: How does IVF work?
Do a google on it and you will find all your answers. :)
Re: How does IVF work?
I am not sure about the multiple babies but I think it's because lots of sperms are injected in to an egg and then sometimes two sperms or more attach to the egg and all start to develop in to separate fetuses.
Re: How does IVF work?
One cycle of IVF takes a month. You begin with injectible hormones that stimulate the ovaries to produce many eggs. The injections are daily for about 10 to 12 days and the woman is carefully monitored (usually every other day) by ultrasound to check the ovaries and egg growth.
When the eggs are ripe, the doc removes the healthy-sized eggs with a needle. The eggs are transferred to a lab where a lab tech injects each egg with one sperm. The fertilized eggs are then placed in an incubator and monitored for growth. After about 10 days, the eggs are checked for health and genetics and successful growth. Depending on the woman's history the docs then prepare 2 or 3 of the good eggs for transfer. The rest are frozen for future use. The good eggs are injected thru the cervix into the uterus where hopefully one of them successfully implants and creates a pregnancy. Twins are fairly common because of the number of fertilized eggs that are transferred. And they do not allow gender choice.
Re: How does IVF work?
Mamaof3 pretty much covered it.
Note also that this means that after a successful cycle, you may have several frozen fertilized eggs left over. Depending on your personal views, "discarding" of these may be a real moral issue. Be sure to talk to your spouse and doctor about the options.
Re: How does IVF work?
Mo3 summed it all up.
Just a quick thing, sometimes the IVF cycle takes more than a month.I took the injections for more than 3 weeks before they were able to retrieve the eggs.So that made my cycle pretty long.

Salam all
I just done my IVF -- first cycle. It took abt/almost two months. The worst part is after the eggs retrieval also after the eggs transfer. I suffer a very bad blotted. They have to removed 3 gallon of liquid from my tummy.
Yes you can choose the baby gender but you have to pay extra for that
They (the doctor) will put 3 embryos if your age is around 35 to 41. If your age is 41 up some doctor will put 5 embryos!

It's not 10 days -- in my case only three days. And some case only 5 days.

multiple babies are just due to the number of embroys being trasferred increasing the possibility of multiples. it has nothing to do with lots of sperms being injected to an egg..(which does not happen btw)
Re: How does IVF work?
ain, best wishes for success to you! Yes, each person responds differently to the hormone treatments so a "typical" ivf cycle takes about a month from start to finish but there is indeed wide variation. It sounds like you suffered from OHSS, overstimulation of the ovaries which can be dangerous. Thats why most fertility docs carefully monitor patients with daily ultrasounds and bloodwork so that overstimulation can be prevented and action taken quickly if symptoms of it begin to develop before it becomes severe.
