Once you do propose it totally changes the friendship that existed as now you see them in a different light. I personally think it is better to keep it distinct- friends and your other half. Friendship can be a good basis for love and a long term relationship, but if it does not work, and you have mutual friends as well, it could mean you lose many friendships in the long run.
