How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Back in the good ol’ days, Friday and Saturday were holiday for schools and most offices. But now, Friday is a working day, and Saturday & Sunday are holidays. So how do people manage the Friday prayers? People just go from work, or is Friday a half day?

Prayer time is usually 1:30, so people take lunch at 12, go back at 1, and then take another break at 1:30?

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

studying at a Muslim University in India, we had half-day on Fridays so it wasn't a problem...here in Canada, alHamdolillah, i'vfe lots of flexibility in my work hours so i take a couple of hours off on Friday to have lunch at home then do Friday prayers. i always go with my bro for the Friday prayers since both of us work at the same university. he is a senior prof so he keeps two hours free on Friday as well.

Then how do children go to Friday prayers? Daddy is at work, and they are in school.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

they are all grown ups at the University...my only nephew goes to Friday prayers during the lunch hour. two of the nieces do NOT go to Friday prayers as they are NOT required in Islam to go for salaat ul Jum'a.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Well India is different. Growing up, a tradition in Pakistan was that children accompanied their father/grand father/older siblings to Jumma prayer. Everyone dressed up in khameez shalwar (because that is all it is good for, a ceremonial dress), and we usually walked to the bigger mosque. Following that, we all had lunch at home. We weren't doing anything special, everyone around us did the same.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

I like KSA for Fridays because we used to have Thursdays and Fridays off.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

In private organization - the lunch and prayer timing on friday is - 13:00 to 15:00 -

In govt ogranization , 75 % of staff doesnt come back after Jummah prayers - official break timing is now 13:00 to 14:30 , half an hour less due to Saturdays treated as non working days .

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

So the assumption is that everyone will go to a mosque close by? What about minority sects, who have a few mosques only in certain parts of the city? How do kids in high school go? Private schools don't usually allow their students to go outside of the school grounds.

I am sure it's not as hard as I am thinking it is :)

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Hehehe yes same here in Dubai Friday n Saturday off :)

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Mosques - in certain parts of the city - haha you must be joking , talking about karachi here , if you walk for a mile ( east , west , north , south ) , you will atleast see three mosques , one belonging to Deobandis , another to Bralivis and a Imam Bargha for Ahl-e-Tashee

Ahl-e-Tashee group has an Imam Bargha on almost every major roundabout of this city . For Ahl-e-Sunnat , majority of mosques are built over the night on encroached land , same as Allama said ( Masjid tu bana-di shaab bahar mein eemaan ki haraaRat walooN ne ).

O bhai - travel to pakistan - all you are going to see mosques , madrasay , but no namazi : ) - The best way to encroach a land in this city is to build a mosque or Madrasa .

I am not sure about school , but I guess they must offer the prayer facility at their premises ..

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Yup.... and if anyone does care about Friday, he must be labelled a maulana.

My cousins get off of school just early enough to be able to come back home, quickly change, do wudu and rush to the mosque with their dad. Schools do not provide any such facilities whatsoever as far as I know.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Mulana or not but I know one thing for sure - if this namaz break is not a paid break , a majority will not turn up to the mosque :)

I dont know - but way back in 80s and early 90s , at our school ( second shift ) used to pray zuhar and asaR ( for ahl-e-tashee - zuharain) ..

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Seems like efficiency hasn't really increased due to Friday's being working days. It's still half days, and not much probably gets done.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

In the UK - friday prayers are held in the hospital at 1.30 thats where dad does it and bro joins him when at home and when he is at uni it is allowed for people to skip class and go to prayers.

WHat i have seen in pak - all my uncles offices from the large to small - roll the lunch hour and friday prayers into one so most go, shops open after 3 and stay open till late, schools allow time off - its not an issue!

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

Works out just fine. Go for prayer 1.25. Prayer is supposed to start at 1.30, but the imam fancies prolonging his diatribe against the government and namaz finishes at 2.00. Go out for lunch, back to the office around 3.

Re: How does Friday being a working day work out in Pakistan?

When i went to pak last year most Fridays all the shops were open.... Hardly any of the lads locally went to read Jummah.... here in the UK when I have a public holiday off on a Friday I do go to read Jummah the mosque but usually just take out a little time at wrk and read it here.
