When someone says;

“Adab arz” or “Adab arz hai”?

I was silly and said hello. =(( (Although I wanted to say walaikum- adab arz hai )

I think the answer will be the same 'Aadab Arz hai' or 'Tasleemaat'.. But I don't find people using these nice words now :(

Yeah I was amazed at the use too. Thought it was pretty polite.

Btw what does tasleemaat mean?

This doesn't sound right muqawee bhai :(

Yes, I'm not sure about this.. but have watched in old movies that when someone say 'Aadab' the reply is ' Tasleemaat'.. Tasleemaat is derived from Salaam.

Let me go through the scenes of 'Umrao Jaan' and 'Pakeeza' :D

I guess you would do the adab gesture back? You know, raise your right hand to your forehead..that’s what I’ve always been taught..we hyderabadis are big on barron ko adaab karna.. “Jhukay, mundi ko paet may rahkay adab karro miyan…”

Its not right to se Walekum Aadaab.. Its kinda funny.. Aadaab is not a single word, its a complete phrase 'Aadaab Baja lata / lati hoon', which has been shortened to just 'Aadaab' and I think 'Aadaab Arz hai' is used by poets when someone praise their shair.

adab arz hai will be replied with adaab.....

my nana used to say adab to non muslims

No but the person used ‘Adab arz hai’ in place of hello :naak:

I guess I could just be a smarty pants and tell the person you don’t say Adab arz hai as hello. Its just not right in Urdu. What say? =D

Ok Hadeel here is a scene from Umrao Jaan (watch between 52:00 to 52:06) where Rekha says ‘Tasleem’ and Farooq replies ‘Aadaab’

No I just want you to watch 6 seconds movie (from 52:00 to 52:06).. I have heard poets using 'Aadab Arz hai' in reply to praise for their shair.

One more thing, The Aadaab should be said first by the young to elders and they reply ’ Jeete raho, Khush raho’.

This above video shows how you reply when people who are either younger or older than you say adaab. I wanted to know what to say when the person from the same age group says adaab.

So I guess you do say 'Tasleem' after all? hmm =/

dont reply him/her if he/she is a muslim instead say:salam:…because that is the best salam…
