Re: how do you make your own backdrop?
I found this backdrop stand from a web site. Is this what you are looking for?
Backdrop Frame - Photograph at BetterPhoto.com
The base is 12" by 12" or use a 15" circle wood base from Home Depot. Total cost less than $20. You can add a center pole for support.
You can make this backdrop for the reception by using these instructions, and adapting it according to the venue:
PVC stage backdrop or room divider

Just get a “sheer” type fabric-like tuelle, chiffon, organza, sheer - in a dark color of your choice…black, midnight blue, deep deep purple…get enough that when you hang it, it bunches tight enough together to give you the color/density effect you want. It will look “flowy” and romantic.
Use the tiny “rice lights” strands rather than standard Christmas lights. The bulbs are much smaller than traditional christmas lights, and if you get the “twinkle” type, you’ll get more of a subtle Midsummer Nights Dream/“firefly” effect rather than bright flashy Christmas lights.
Having the lights BEHIND a sheer will “soften” and sort of buffer the light which will also help avoid what may be a photography issue or concern.
For the lights, check ebay, party supply stores and garden/patio depts of most large stores like walmart/kmart etc.
For the fabric…make sure you check any clearance sections of the fabric depts. Look for good deals.
