How do you make peas pulao with lots of flavour? Mine never seems to have much taste. I would really be grateful to any1 if they could tell me a nice recipe for this. it would be for 3 cups of rice. Thanks!
Re: How do you make peas pulao rice?
Many ways to do this, giving you the simplest one with this post:
The one where the rice stays white: Some peas (a cup would do), 4-6 cloves (laung), LOTS of peppercorns, cause I like them!. 3/4 tsp. cumin and one large ilaichi, (the black kind). Heat a couple of teaspoons of oil, let it get barely smoking, and throw in the whole spices, soon as the sizzle/pop, put in all the peas (I use partially thawed frozen ones). Let the peas get coated with oil for a few seconds and then add your washed/soaked-for-30-minutes/drained rice. Stir it gently for less than a minute so most grains get coated with oil. For 3 cups of rice, add a generous 4.5 cups of water and a teaspoon to a teaspoon and a half of salt. Stir gently just once. Let the mixture come to a boil, reduce heat to medium high and let it cook uncovered till you start to see the top layer of rice. At this stage, I just cover the pot tightly and stick it in a 275-300 degree oven for 25-30 minuts, while I cook the rest of the stuff on the stove.
Will give you the slight variations with the next post.

Please dont torture. I cant even order this stuff.
Re: How do you make peas pulao rice?
On the variations:
Some people like to fry the initial base with sauteing/partially browning some onions to which they add a teaspoon of minced ginger/garlic paste before proceeding with adding the whole spices. Would work if you're looking for a more flavored pulao.
Yet others, omit the ginger/garlic and go just for the onions and then the whole spices.
With both the above methods, the rice would lose it's prisine white tinge and would acquire somewaht of a "bagharey chawal taste"
And yes, some of my acquantainces add a tablespoon of yogurt to the masala before adding the peas and reducing it. I just think it tastes weird. But in the spirit of fairness, thought I'd let you know.
Lastly, feel free to throw in some whole serrano or jalapeno peppers in the masala before adding the rice to steam and flavor the whole dish.
Hope this helps.
Re: How do you make peas pulao rice?
Thanks for your recipe! Do you know how to make the brown pulao rice too? When you supposed to add water is it meant to be plain water or do you have to boil it separately with other stuff like you do for meat pulao. I think because i use plain water thats why it has no flavour.

Re: How do you make peas pulao rice?
Taffy, the next 2 variations are for a browner rice pulao, does that answer your qeustion or is it something else you're looking for?
Remember, anytime you add rice to a sauteed/browned onion in oil, regardless of any other flavorings, your rice will be brown. The actual FLAVOR, at least in my opinion, comes from the whole spices and/or the garlic and ginger.
Re: How do you make peas pulao rice?
Thanks! I will try cooking it your way next time. Thankyou for all the advice you have given me.

you can buy them in halaal food shops or in Indian cash and carry's
phone and ask them
also for good veg stock use "marigold" stck powder from sainburies or tesco's
they have a low salt version which is very good
