How do you look after your mental health?

Although its considered a taboo in our culture to discuss mental health, but its a bitter fact that alot of our day to day issues can actually impact our mental health in a detrimental manner.

How do you deal with setbacks related to relationships? school grades? unemployment? general unhappiness? illness?

Are there any tips that we can keep in mind for the general upkeep of our mental health and create strength within so much so that setbacks in life dont take a toll on us?

Re: How do you look after your mental health?

Make physical exercise a part of your weekly routine. It makes you feel better about yourself. Aside from that, advice would have to be problem specific.
A general advice would be keep yourself occupied.

Re: How do you look after your mental health?

Its a fact that regular physical workouts - not necessarily running on a treadmill either - make an impact on your mental health. Your mind naturally starts to think more positively and clearly.

Re: How do you look after your mental health?

I did some exercise yoga it was a serious workout, it helps, but I was painfully sore for a week afterwards. I don't do it regularly...But I feel more flexible when I do do it. It really keeps your mind off things because its just so painful, and you need to concentrate.

Re: How do you look after your mental health?

what an awesome thread. :)

For me, praying helps. Looking at the bigger picture helps. Having a more holistic approach to life and career helps.

I am a worry wart by nature but my faith in things working out for the better keeps me sane.

Believe nothing. Question everything.

Re: How do you look after your mental health?

Like people have said, exercise is very important. You also need to manage stress and worry. I recommend reading "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie. It's a very good book. Even reading a Cliff Notes version will help you.

Other than that, socializing is necessary. We are more connected than ever before, yet many of us are socially deprived. Try to spend time, face to face, with friends and family. Preferably the kind that aren't made for Life1.

Killing people on Battlefield 3 also helps.
