This is a great question often asked here. There is no definite answer. Socio-economic status is easy to determine but personality is not. The problem is that street-smart people recognize not-so street-smart people easily but its not true the other way around.
First and foremost give yourself enough time and don’t rush decision. Everyone has shortcomings, be sure you know all the major ones and are ok with them before you marry. I made the biggest mistake of my life because I rushed decision. Liars and deceivers always create this aura of urgency around them because time is the biggest enemy of their fake personas. One thing that I’ve found a good predictor is the ease in communication. If you find yourself constantly walking on eggshells around the other person, it’s not a good match.

I don’t think you can know, all you can get is an idea. When looking & doing rishtas, people are at their best behaviour possible & some people are really good at concealing things even for months.
As far as changing behaviour is concerned, people change, things change, situations & circumstances change, so act accordingly.

Actually I have recently seen quite a few engagements being called off because of huq mehar. I don’t know whats up with that.

Outdated concept?? Well this is what our religion says. Its her “huq”, degree or no degree.
And those engagements are not being called off by girls but guys who don’t like the amount of huq mehar given by girls. Now obviously a girl shouldn’t ask for too much which a guy cant give her which is a different topic altogether.

The entire point is to find out before marriage its kind of late after marriage…getting married to someone is no joke.

Thats what I said, you cant really find out before living with someone i.e. before marriage. Getting married is no joke, I agree, but this jokes has been happening all around us for a long time.

DecentGuy made a good point about flow of communication. There should be a feeling of comfort when talking to a person. If someone is genuinely interested in you, they’ll maintain communication…it won’t be flakey. Look for consistency in their words/beliefs and between words and actions. Social media, if they use it, might provide some insight. How they interact with their family, friends, elders, etc can also give you some clues. How they respond in times of stress…and..do they have the ability to see things from another’s perspective, to apologize etc. But as mentioned earlier, you need a good amount of time to look out for these things. Beware the person who comes on strong way too fast because usually those strong sentiments will fizzle out just as quickly as they begun. I understand that it’s not something everyone feels comfortable with, but I personally have faith in istikhara…so that’s something you can look into as well for guidance.

We learn things at our own pace, some people are just quicker than others and remain ahead on the learning curve for decades. By the time the slower partner does some catching up, it’s too little too late. Also there is the Psychological manipulation aspect of street-smartness that some wouldn’t even want to learn despite knowing its effectiveness.
