Does anyone get offended at getting gift cards? Strnagely enough...there are people that get offended if they get that.

i wouldnt get offended… but i always appreciate a gift just to see how much thought went into it… that ends pretty bad sometimes 
the husband isnt allowed to give gift cards though.. half the gift for me is the thought process.. cant expect it from everyone else.. but god help him if he gets it wrong 
i think the ones that mind gift cards are the ones taht always try to put an effort into a gift… i know i do… so if someone that knows you well enough still gives you a gift card.. its sorta like trying to take the easy way out…

I like giving gifts and not gift cards but sometimes it is soooo difficult. If I really cannot come up with any gift idea, I will give gift card or if I buy somthing but am not sure if it is really going to be used by that person, I give gift reciept along with it.

I like giving gifts to people I care about. Like I'll go and pick something they'd like to get.
I do something similar to Lucy where I usually will gift them meaningful things.
I give gift cards to people I am not that close to but I definitely want to gift them something.

Like, ok, for one of my birthdays my friend bought me a shirt.... it was a nice shirt, not something i would've chosen myself or my style, but the thought that counts..right? except.... she says it fits my personality, and then calls it a "slutty shirt.".... (yes..I found that mean :D)

Hubby and I both prefer getting gift cards, or cash/checks as gifts. We're both super picky. Plus we enjoy going "shopping" together when we get gifts cards. We have had people give us items that they thought we would love.....but given a choice, we will ALWAYS prefer gift cards or cash/check. Heck even close family members (such as my in-laws) gives us "stuff" that they assume we'll like.....and we never do. Majority of the "stuff" we receive goes straight to donation.
Even from my parents...I always get cash for my birthday. And with hubby, he usually takes me shopping and lets me pick out what I want....and I prefer it that way.

What is a decent amount to give in a gift card for someone you are acquaintances with ? I would always prefer to give gift cards but I never know what amount would not be considered cheap....

Whenever they go back home, MIL brings back shawls, saris etc. Last time they went, I got a shawl, kapray for salwar kameez, and also some velvet jewelry bag/case thing. :hinna:
Otherwise when they visit (they live in a diff. state), we get home decor stuff like picture frames, Waterford crystal vases/candle holders and other home decor stuff. One time she showed up with this weird mini old-school popcorn machine!

lol that's kinda cute. I mean if she's giving it dil se and doesn't lord it over your head that she gives you gifts, it's kinda mean to just chuck it in the donation box :/

Firstly I don’t think “bad” of her for giving the gifts. My own mother also has a habit of giving me random stuff (even after I’ve told her MANY times that her taste and mine are polar opposites). :hinna: So I get it.
But if I’m being given personal items which will NEVER be used due to my strong dislike for the style…and home decor stuff which hubby and I both agree that neither one of us wants to see at our house…then what’s the point in keeping it boxes? Isn’t it better to donate it so it goes to someone who will actually use it?

sometimes, gift cards can also have good thoughts behind them. for example, a friend who knows i love tim hortons coffee and get one daily gave me a timmys card, i was so happy to have free coffee for sooo long, i loved it! i also know this friend gave me that card with good thoughts, thats all that matters

.... yeah gift is a gift but its annoying to see someone gave it to you just for the sake of getting rid his/her own gift . .......cash/cheque or gift card for me....i dont wanna waste my time and money on something for someone which I know they may or may not like (unless thats the person I know **very well **what he/she will like as a gift)... so its easy to give them a choice to buy (to contribute towards to) something they like...
sometimes i buy clothes for newborns or for kids under 10......and when we go to someones house first time, its usually a boxed gift with a gift receipt in it.

Lol I get what you’re saying. One of the two I mentioned is also my bestfriend and all these years, she only gave me one gift which I’ve actually used. Rest have been thrown out after some time or given for charity. I think her most weird/unfortunate gift was a top-dress, the color was actually really nice, but it was size XXL .. It was very weird. I had no idea what to say as I normally use S/M .. Didnt know what to say to her, I actually ended up returning it to her so she could change the size. She never came back with it again. My assumption is it was one she maybe had brought for herself.
