I’m sure waxing is pretty popular among desi girls now. I have been using an epilator up to now (one of my frends in pakistan told me that is u use a hair-removal cream it makes ur skin go darker! I don’t know how true that is but I don’t use a hair removal cream I only use an epilator)
However, when I went to pakistan last year for my sister’s wedding, I discovered that my khala pays some woman to come home and wax her! My initial reaction was → .. lol I couldn’t believe khala gets a FULL BODY wax from another woman. But then I was like, its actually a pretty good idea! I mean people go to salons to get it done, u might as well call someone at home to do it for u. And its the same woman every time who does it, so its less embarrassing!
So anyways, I decided to get a wax off her for the first time in my life! I was scared, I was embarrassed but the woman was soooo nice! She didn’t make me feel uncomfortable at all and her waxing was EXCELLENT!
Long story short, I have two questions:
This woman from whom I got a wax in pakistan, used home made wax. And it worked perfectly! I didn’t get a chance to ask her how she made it so I’m asking you guys now. Does anyone know how to make home made wax??? I’ve read up on the internet and the recipes seem to be conflicting. Please give me a PROVEN recipe for home made wax.
Secondly, I got in-grown hair afterwards. Is there a way to prevent these in-grown hair? And do in-grown hair get pulled out if you wax again or they stay there?
Also, has anyone ever waxed “down there”? It must hurt like BAD! But my query is, since its a very sensitive area, can u get bruises/bleeding when u wax there?
I’d be very thankful if you guys could please answer these questions.
well i just started going for bikini wax since last year...but imnot very regular on it...esp now thts its winter..i dont realy care to much....i wax down there onmy own sometimes...
but it hurts like a @#@!# u knw what....and i had taken pain killer when i went...and the lady used herbal wax on me..coz ive really sensitive skin...
umm i dint get any bruises..but i get a lil blood out from the pores...u knw what i mean?
If I start bikini waxing, I'll be doing it myself, not from a salon. I'll take a pain killer as u said. I think everyone's skin is very sensitive in that area. And yes, blood from open pores is what I meant to ask about. I guess that's normal so?
I can't remember where but I read somewhere that the trick is to wax small tiny areas when bikini waxing because its not a straight area like ur arms or legs. If u try and do a large area in one go, thats how u end up with bruising.
Please people also comment on the recipe and in-grown hair.
I got in grown hair when i use epilator. I don't have this problem when i use wax. I am talking particularly about 'down there'. You can exfoliate using a scrub according to your skin. This will reduce in grown hair. But i don't know how u can prevent them.
If u can go well with epilator, i don't think you will have any problem waxing under legs. Doing small areas is right, it is convenient. There are recipes for homemade wax but waxing strips work best. You get rid of all the hassle of strips and warming wax at intervals. I keep a fat candle in washroom, n just warm the prepared wax strips before using. Its very easy and time saving.
P.S:Best thing i learnt from Gina is using alum stone after waxing. You wont have to wax too often if you use alum stone.
Huma - ingrown hairs unfortunately stay put until they are ready to come out. I get them all the time and it is SO annoying. But the worst thing to do is try to pick at it because it can lead to blemishes. Exfoliating is the most helpful thing you can do help speed up the process of getting rid of them. My dermatologist also told me that keeping the skin very well moisturized is also essential. I have dry skin and he actually told me that petroleum jelly is actually the BEST moisturizer for the skin. It is messy but it really helps. I have been using it regularly after shower and before I got to bed (a little of it goes a long way and is less messy) and my skin has shown a lot of improvement. I still get the ingrown hairs but I notice that they they go away a lot quicker.
With waxing down there, I do it myself as well. I cant imagine having someone else do it for me. Here are my tips: Take a couple of painkillers (atleast 2, preferably 3) with food a half hour before you start waxing. Wash down there to make sure there is no moisturizer on and the area is clean. It will help make the wax grip the hairs. Trim the hairs so that they are not that long... quarter of an inch or so is good. Definitely use small strips and wax quickly and efficiently. Do not think about the pain so much and try to focus on getting the task accomplished. The longer it takes.... the more you are going to feel the pain naturally. Hold your skin taunt with one hand and pull in the opposite direction of the hair grown with the other hand. As soon as you pull the strip off, apply pressure on that area with your hand for a few seconds. This helps with the pain. My biggest point of advice is to stay regular with it. The more often you do it, the more desensitized you will become about the pain and less anxious you will feel about it (which will only help you was even faster). So this is something that becomes easier to do the more frequently you do I in my opinion. First time it took me a 40 minutes!!! Now takes me 15 minutes.
Pores can bleed a bit down there and there might be some bruising but this is normal as it comes with the territory of waxing. Nothing to worry about as they are things that go away by themselves with time.
As far for recipe - sorry I can't help you with that my dear! I once made homemade wax and it turned out awesome. I used some online recipe. But then second time I followed the exact same recipe and for some reason it came out bad. It is a messy and time consuming process in my opinion. I never attempted to make it myself ever again. Waxing itself is a time consuming process..why make it longer? I use Sally Hanson Brazillian Formula wax and i think it's the BEST one out there. I have tried many but this works the best for me.
Dabbing the ingrown hair with a warm wash-cloth may help release them from under the skin, exfoliating will also help. The area to be waxed needs to be very clean and dry.. u should dust the area with talcum powder this helps the wax adhere better to the hair and not the skin, which means less aggravated skin.
Wipe with chilled rosewater to seal all the pores, u'll notice less ingrown hair. Gently going over with phitkari/alum will reduce the hair-growth over time.

I prefer hot wax... waxing strips never work for me! I have only tried facial waxing strips and i did not have a good experience! The candle idea is a good one for waxing strips but u can also boil some water and keep your hot wax jar in hot water to keep it warm. Alum stone? I will try that. How does it reduce hair growth?
PunjabiRose, thank you so much sweety for ur detailed reply, especially the bit about dealing with the pain!
Yes, ingrown hairs are soo annoying! What do u exfoliate with? Also, instead of using petroleum jelly on ur skin as a moisturiser, try using a cream called EGYPTIAN MAGIC. Look it up on youtube. I haven't tried this thing myself but from watching the videos on youtube, it seems like a pretty awesome product. Its texture is somewhat like that of petroleum jelly but its not greasy and its supposed to work exactly like vaseline. The thought of petroleum jelly all over my body just doesn't feel too good!
Gina, thanks for the useful tips. I didn't know phitkari/alum could help. I hope I can find it in Ireland!
To everyone else, the only question still left open is that of a proven recipe for home made wax. Anyone?
Its more popular and useful than I thought… looks like even Madonna uses it! And its not just a moisturiser, its supposed to heal burn marks, stretch marks and can even be used on ur hair!
And no I’m not affiliated with it guys, I’m just giving an alternative to using vaseline or petroleum jelly.
If no one here has a recipe for home made wax, I’ll call my khala in pakistan and ask her to ask that lady about the recipe. I’ll try it out and post it up here if I get it.
Huma - first off: you are very welcome for the advice!!
I think I am going to stick with the petroleum Jelly … I use the equate brand it smells so good! And using a very little bit of it goes a long way and after like 15 minutes it absorbs into your skin. Its done wonders for me and that is what the dermatologist recommended above any other lotion or moisturizers !!! I’ll stick with what the doctor says but thanks for mentioning the alternative.
I know petroleum jelly does wonders. I have used it on my feet and its been a long time since I had cracked heels!
Yup I hate using loofah's too. When u mentioned exfoliating before waxing, i thought u were referring to some cream or scrub. But exfoliating with these gloves sounds great and simple! I'm gonna buy these the next time i go shopping..
You cook all of the above over slow-flame till it's a light caramel color.. let it cool. Pour it into a heat-proof bowl and use it with a spatula (hot wax) or let it cool and stretch-it and use it as cold-wax. (wax on wax method) u spread it on the area to be waxed and pull the wax in the opposite direction.
