Slowly but surely after the longest day in June the days begin to shorten, the weather begins to cool, the birds hasve stopped singing, screaming Swifts disappear from the sky and the green leaves lose colour into a multitude of yellow’s, brown’s and gold.
Summer has gone and autumn is upon us. This summer has flown by. Spring was late on average in the UK by 2 weeks because the grounds were fozen. Season flowers such as Snowdrops, Daffodils and Bluebells were all late. Some of the migrating birds arrived late.
I dread winter not because it is cold and dark. I love the beauty of winter. However, I work out of doors and the cold, dark and long nights become an obstacle for me. I like what winter may bring - bare trees, white snow carpets, migrating Fieldfares and Redwings. I wont state what my job is as I do not wish to disclose that.
It has been a while since we have had a good summer in the UK. The last i remember was 2006. This year was not too bad. It was better than the last 3 years but hardly the bar-b-que summer we were told we were going to have.
What do others think and feel as we move into the cold, dark and long nights?
I love the colours of autumn and all the rich coloured seasonal vegetables and of course, feeding the birds. I love winter too and I truly miss the picturesque views in Berkshire’s woods and villages.
these pics I took in January 2010 in Earley Berkshire where I used to live.
These pics remind me of Robert Frost’s poem “stopping by the woods on a snowy evening”.
We have a huge back yard in this new property so i plan to grow lots of vegetables and herbs this coming year hence can’t wait for the spring and summer again, besides I plan to explore all the wildlife reserves in Buckinghamshire during next spring.
It's quite depressive for me even in Pakistan. But in mid winter I do like dark, cold, windy nights. I love winter winds.
I like winter in Pakistan. I originate from a village area and I used to enjoy waking about 7-ish 8-ish and getting out of bed and entering the garden and finding it cold and gettign back into bed again and lying there snug for a bit more time under a large thick blanket :P
I used to enjoy walking out in the morning into the fields and seeing the dew on the grass.
To see how place can look in summer and winter look at this set off photos. When I look at the summer section I realise just how rich, vibrant and colourful an English summer can be. Thats why I miss summer.
Compare and contrast the same place in different seasons.
Thats true. How can anyone not enjoy a fresh carpet of snow with golden vegetation peaking out and both the snow and the vegetation shines because of the sun.
The above photo is ofa reservoir in lancashire and like most lakes and reservoirs up North they all froze.
