How do you deal with Haram things?

From a lecture, I learnt that wine/music cassettes/CDs etc should be discarded in the bins.

As in if someone gives you a wine bottle as a Christmas present you don’t go and give it to your non-believer friends.

If you have decided to give up listening to music since you realized/understood that its haraam, you don’t go and give your CDs/cassettes to another music fan.

Both are poison and you don’t poison others with them. You are suppose to dump them in the bin.

I am a bit confused about haraam food. There were times when I mistakenly bought haraam food as in I found some ingredients from animal origin (or I suspect so) like “shortening”, “fat” etc.

As a kid, if I was given haraam food in lucky draws etc or if I accidentally bought them, I would give it to my non-muslims friends.

I just used to think it this way that this is food, I can’t eat so I let someone else eat it and not waste it. They eat it anyway and also the fact that many people are dying from hunger everyday so the idea to discard (haraam) food didn’t cross my mind until recently.

Here I am talking about packed stuff like sweets (gelatin), biscuits (shortening/fats), crisps (chicken powder) and especially now those E codes too (big headache they are.)

Do you guys throw away such food or give them away? Any thoughts on this.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

Well from what i know, when Alcohol was declared haram to muslims, they did not give it to the Kufar neighbours / friends, but rather discarded it in the streets.

Whats haram for us is haram for humanity in general too. So instead of passing it on to the non muslims, one should discard it.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

^ Sure I understand about alcohol. But how about the scenario I mentioned about packed food.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

Im no Alim, or scholar, but perhaps we can take the example of Alcohol, and apply it to all haram things.

Alcohol was declared haram, and it was unlawful to gift that haram thing to someone else. One could infer from that event that all haram things are unlawful to gift to even non muslims.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

^ if haram food is given to starving non-muslim people it can save lives. Not sure if it is right to destroy food while people are going hungry to bed, just my 2 cents

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

That offcourse would be a legitimate case. Even muslims can eat haram if they are starving.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

The question asked is very simple and so is the answer from my understanding... The list of haram (forbidden) is not too big and even those are allowed in some situations.
If a product has animal shorting or fat from an animal other than pig then it's non-zabiha, not haram so there shouldn't be any problem giving it to someone who eats non zabiha. Now for the haram food products, one can simply make a judgment of either a person who believes that pig or any other haram product is allowed for him (which most likely is not) can use it, for examle a homeless person who's going through a trash bin then I don't think there will be insha Allah any problems with your faith.
One thing I would suggest is that you tell the person that the food you are giving him/her is forbidden in Islam and chances are it is in their religion too so he/she should look up and if help is needed, you will help them.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

I had some stuff which ofcourse I wasn’t going to consume, so I told a non-muslim friend that I’ll give it to her. She was happy to know. Today I’m supposed to take it over to her.

What if I had given my words to her :bummer: ab kia karoon? :bummer:

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

you may do as chicago base has suggested.

Re: How do you deal with Haram things?

In terms of food, to the best of my knowledge we're not supposed to be giving others anything that we consider haraam or not fit for consumption irregardless of their faith.
