I recently moved from the US to the UK. I’ve been straightening my hair for the last few years with a straightening iron and it used to stay pretty straight in the US where the weather was mostly warm and dry in the state i lived in. But ever since i’ve moved to the UK my hair just doesn’t stay straight. Within twenty minutes of straightening it starts curling from the tips and starts getting frizzy from the top.
Also, baldness runs in our family among the women and while my hair is neither very thick nor thin right now, i’m afraid that as i get older i may start balding too, so i don’t want to screw around with my hair too much by using a lot of strong styling products or having permanent straightening done. I’ve limited my hair straightening to twice a week to avoid excessive heat damage. I wish i could leave my hair in its natural state without straightening it at all, but it looks hideous because it is neither curly nor straight and extremely frizzy. So UK women out there, any tips on how to keep my straightened hair straight with products/techniques that won’t damage my hair?
After you’ve straightened you haor with the iron, apply a balm/lotion on your hair such as L’Oreals’s liss Xtreme, or something like that. I’ve tons of that stuff but they add a glossy finish and keep hair protected from humidity.
Before you use any heat stylers, you must use a heat protectant spray. Tresemme do a good one which also tames flyaway hair. Then afterwards, apply a touch of styling serum to keep everything smooth.
You don't have to use too many products to keep them smooth :)
i have curly wavey hair.. and the best thing i use to strighten it is one towel dry i put frizee the yellow bottle ( i think its the thermo one) and then let my hair dry naturally or if in a rush i blow dry it. then i use the ghd striaghteners they are the best on the market! and my hair can stay straighten as long as i keep out of the rain lol.
Thanks everyone for the tips. I've moved to London. I've never used serum before so this may sound stupid, but how exactly do you apply it? Do you just rub some on your palms and then rub your palms over the top of your hair, or do you pick up your hair strand by strand and rub serum through it? How much serum should i be using? My hair isn't that long, it falls about an inch below my shoulders.
Also, how much are ghd straighteners and where can they be bought? I was using a Chi straightener in the US and it was great, but when i came to England i forgot about the difference in voltage and plugged it directly into the wall without a transformer and burned it up. :( So i am currently using my sister's Remington straightener, which doesn't seem that effective, plus strands of my hair often get caught in the ceramic plates. :( :(

I have extremely curly hair too. I don't use anything for straightening.. No serum nothing.. I hate the oily greasy look they all have.
As far as flat iron is.. i use sedu. I bought one for UK/Asia too. Works awesome. Its same thing as the one they have for US.. just different voltage.

it might be the straighter too which is not doing a good enough job of keeping your hair striaght. i used several brands before chi and none of them give me the result chi does. so maybe try to go back to chi. i have also recently started using chi's silk therapy and it's 44 iron guard and i think they work very well, maybe try them.
other then that, i don't think anything can you u a lot. i am also from USA and my hair have no problem here after being straighten, they stay that way unless i wash them. but when i go to karachi, my hair just does not get straighten no matter what product i use on them.
another thing u can do is to go to a saloon and ask them to suggest something for you.
in case you want to rock your curls instead of straight - i recommend this to help keep the frizz away and bring out the curl:
-keep conditioner in your hair (don't rinse)
-apply a curl creme and let dry naturally
No its not a stupid question. You can either apply the serum to damp hair (towel-dryed) or after its dry and styled. I normally apply mine after its styled to avoid greasiness. Just squirt a very small amount (approx size of smartie :)) into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and then gently apply it to the top of the hair to smooth the flyaways and then over the rest of the hair. Hope this helps!
