Ok I have a few questions about the business aspect of Bollywood movies.
-
Do Bollywood movies have any other revenue besides cinema tickets? I imagine tv channels probably have to pay the industry to play their movies. But that is only the major ones, I doubt the smaller TV channels care. Album sales are probably another, but that is only if originals are sold.

Is there such a thing as a legal Bollywood movie rental? In India, or anywhere else? Seems like they just rent copies. In Pakistan there used to be something called “Master Copy” that was only rented out to people who knew the video guy. Probably the original print, doesn’t mean it is legal.

King Video and Mansoor video, what do they do? Just make copies and forward them on to other video stores?
-
How do these movies come to Pakistan? I mean the movie is released in India, and already tele-sync copies are available. The bootleg mafia is that fast?
Re: How do Bollywood movies make money besides cinema tickets?
^^ So are you talking about how the production team / director etc recover their cost or how bollywood as a whole make money?? I just asked because it doesn’t make since bollywood is not some company?

I guess they make money by selling the prints and distribution rights to a lot of people across the world and from the audio CDs/casettes they sell even prior to the movie release. I read somewhere that most of their money now a days comes from UK, US, Canada, the middle-east and Australia- given the huge population of Indians in these countries.
Re: How do Bollywood movies make money besides cinema tickets?
a company usually takes ownership of the audio/cd sales. Like Tips would buy the music and pay the producer for it. So the movie producer makes money.
Then as someone mentioned the distributors buy the movies to market, sell, and show the movies and pay for how many prints they buy depending on how popular they think the movie would be in their region. Like a Sunny Deol movie would be a huge hit in Punjab so the distributors there would pay more and buy more prints but not so big in the South so those distributors would pay less and buy less prints.
