Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?
**its a lonnnnng story. to make it short, i had an unusual and unique start. i lived in a village until age 14. never lived in a city b4. i also never went to school. my dad and big bro wud teach home school me may be a couple of hours on a couple of days in a week. irony is my dad was a principle in a village high school. my dad knew that schools in villages at that time were teaching nothing and the kids learned bad things instead. so, when my big bro got a teaching job at AligaRh Muslim University only then i moved to the city with him.
i studied well and got accepted in med school. the same year my big bro who i was living with moved to the US to do his PhD and as a result i moved into the university's residence. i had no elder watching over me and on top of that my bro sent me my lavish monthly stipened in US dollars * so i dropped my crystal bowl. at the end of my first year in med school i was kicked out coz my attendance fell way short [35% as opposed to min required 75%] i skipped classes, watched too many movies and hung out with friends 24/7.
after that life was a living hell. so metophorically speaking, every1 effectively condemned me to die so i contemplated suicide but thanx to Allah i found solace in namaz and became a good boy. left everything. unwillingly i saought admission in BSc with major in Botany. finished my BSc then my bro helped me immigrate to Canada and i went to university right away. i met this lady who was very kind to me and became my supervisor and under her i finished my MSc and PhD in Horticulture and then she gave me a job as piost doc researcher.
we went to New Zealand lastin January, 2010 and we worked there together until a horrible thing happened. she got diagonosed with cancer and we had to return to canada 2 months prematurely in november. she is undergoing treatment and hence took off from work for three months and as a result i'm laid off for that period of time. inshaa Allah, i'll be back to work in Feb.
thats how i ended up in my profession and thanks Allah it turned out that way. i was a lost soul when i hit my rock bottom.
plz pray for Susan, my supervisor. May Allah cure her cancer and give her full recovery...aameen**
So you are a botanist! I dreamed to become a taxonomist but now I am an accountant!*

**yes it is. its India's ONLY muslim university and it has a great aligarian tradition but unfortunately things aren't going well there. i visit AMU almost every year and it pains to see it deteriorate by the day. i hope it'll maintain its islamic heritage somehow.
did u know that Field Marshall Ayub Khan was enrolled at AMU in 1922.
i had my lowest point in life when i was kicked out of med school and that the condemnation that followed was overwhelming and i felt the life was over as we know it and hence the suicidal thought came across but my faith in deen saved me. Thanx Allah MiyaaN for that :)**

yes of course that's what it's known for it's islamic history.i don't know who ayub khan is. My most fav indian revolutionaries/freedom fighters graduated from there as well though. one of the greats, mulana abul kalam azad, the one that was a strong believer of hindu-muslim unity and the first education minister of india. some of his quotes give me so much peace of mind. Love him along with ashfuqallah khan, another indian muslim. i don't know man, i have too many heroes from indian/world history.
and yes glad you're still with us :p :)
Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?

Now I feel old, since I know the answer I think.
Ayub Khan I believe was the General of the Pakistani Army in 1965.

oh yes, we must all be proud of our history and culture. i mentioned Field Marshall Ayb Khan because he was Pakistan's second President from 1958 to 1969 and also the ONLY Field Marshall in Pakistan Army.**
Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?
^oopps are you a pakistani i kind of rushed through the thread regarding ayub ji? I thought you were indian all this time. sorry. i’m sure people are proud of him too.
:hinna: in my defense i didn’t grow up in india or pakistan for that matter so i’ll use that as my excuse for not knowing him ![]()

Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?
Yours is a remarkable story Khalil bhai... one that can inspire those who are confined by their conditions as well as those who might be sullen over their past failures. Your story epitomizes “where there’s a will, there’s a way”.
Now, back to the thread’s topic... I suppose for me, academia was sort of in the lineage, and despite no formal plans to be an academic, I ended up being one. Dad was a researcher and trainer in the armed forces... mom’s side of the family ran a school. I started with a degree in Computer Science because I really enjoyed working with technology, but also had an aptitude for business, so at the back of my mind, I always wanted to complete my MBA. It just so happened that any job I held since my teenage years always flung me into roles that involved some type of training aspect, and I rather enjoyed it. In the last two years of my undergraduate studies, I completed a bunch of technology certifications and started working as a technology trainer and instructor in various community colleges and vocational institutes. Then, during the MBA, I was entrusted by my professors to offer seminars on specific subjects and this sparked my interest further. Following my MBA and a couple of years of industry experience, I realized that I needed more variety in projects, continued opportunities for learning, and greater independence in defining my own career path based on my interests... so I made up my mind to pursue a Ph.D. Since starting on that journey, I’ve been doing research and teaching while I take breaks every now and then to do some consulting work to keep in step with the industry. I completed my Ph.D. a few months back and am getting started on new research programs.

. mom’s side of the family ran a school.
The reason behind your success!
Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?
Khalil .. you remind me of someone very close who encountered similar events in life … you see I have a strong belief in the fact that just like marriages are made in heaven , what we become in life is more or less also decided for us up in the heavens … :hinna: .. and everything that happens, happens for the best.
its not the career that makes an individual great.. its the individual’s dedication and effort that he puts into his career that makes him a great winner and inspiration to others and to the career.
Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?
Was it planned ? or was it something you got in accidently and then carried on with it coz you found your feet in the field?
I broke things down a certain way and processed things in my head on a multi dimensional level. I thought far and dynamically. Infact I thought so far creatively, that I had little care to do things that were easy. My brain was able to focus on, for example, the music in an advertisement, the rift of a sitar in the back of a song, the variation of a small group of clouds in a big rainy storm, a subtle smell in an area that didn't belong etc. I remained a C student all my life, even when I knew all the material. I once took a high level calculus class where I tutored people, which I myself flunked. Even in school when a project was due, it was more important to me how it looked and felt rather then the actual content.
Then I went to college and I started to do things on the side that I liked. I graduated and founda job and then one day it hit me... Once the realization set in, everything from my past made sense and I just left everything (my job, my car, my "career")to pursue what came naturally to me. To this day, I am still dumb at normal things. I don't have a hi IQ or anything, but there are just things I am better at then most in this universe. I suppose that's how I got to where I am. I am the luckiest man I know.
Re: How did you end up in the career that you are in?
When in school i sucked at science and math. I usually got D's but i always knew i had passion for computer science. Narrowing it down to my choices, i planned to study software. My parents left the decision to me and keeping in view my goal i applied for admission.
I got in at a good university but halfway through the degree, i thought i cant do it..i would be better off in business administration or maybe literature. My grades started to fall and i hated going to uni every day. I hated myself for what i was doing to myself because that was what i wanted to do in the first place and i would be an idiot to be so close to what i want and let it go. So i made it hard for myself, told myself that i can do it and i will do it and i did it!
Got my degree and I am a software engineer and thats what i wanted to be, so Alhumdolillah I am satisfied. =)
