In old days Mullahs used to be poor people, hardly able to meet two ends. There was a famous short story that was alos shown as a ptv drama that a khateeb marries off the his eldest daughter and when his son picks up some coins thrown at wedding he takes it from him and throws saying that it is haraam. As he enters his house after braat leaves he sees two younger daughters and suddenly realises that he is broke and still has two daughters to marry off. He goes back and picks up those coins as tears roll down his cheeks.
But since later part of 90’s i noticed that many Mullahs have lot of money. They go around with body guards and dine in expensive hotels. Like Jamia Hafsa is said to have 5000 students and if one just estimates the cost of 3 meals, it would be Rs1000 per student and 5000 students mean 50,00,000Rs.
50Lakh per month just the meals. And Molvi Ghazi was saying that even his wife drives a car. So there is serious money involved in running this Madrassah. Where does it come from, since the richest source that is arab countries and overseas Pakistanies no longer contribute to Madrassahs like they used to o before.
During my college days, i had two sons of khateebs in my class. Bith were clean shaved, hanged out with girls and did all the usual stuff. One of them during his college days, constructed a big house in one of expensive colonies of Lahore.
