How could they do this...?

They’ve cut down the trees from the shadiest road stretch in Karachi :-/

All that is left now are the barren tree stumps…

Those trees that took years to grow, provided so much shade…

Referring to the American Consulate road…the one that has Marriott and the new ABN Amro branch and Frere Hall…

In the morning today, half of them were gone, all the ones in front of Marriott…the stumps were standing…and the branches were lying on the road :-/ and they were still cutting…

Why? Coz that will increase visibility, and will make security for the American Consulate more effective…

What gave them the right to do this… ? Did they ask the Karachiites if they wanted this to be done to their city? This is OUR city. Who gave the selfish stupid government clowns who dont care about it to come and destroy it like this?

And what for?

For the past couple months, the traffic on that road is mostly partially or fully blocked…and its like a main route that a lot of ppl pass thru…

OK…fine…Karachiites dealt with it patiently…

But now this…? Karachi is already devoid of greenery… This was the only main street in the city that had a green canopy…

We were discussing this just now at the office…why do we need the American consulate there anyway? We already have an embassy in Isloo…this consulate does not serve the public…then what purpose is the consulate serving? its just a hub for the intelligence services…and a source of inconveience to the city dwellers…

:D

That's like saying, Pakistan does not needs its consulate in Los Angeles because it already has an embassy in Washington DC, and that therefore the Los Angeles consulate must be an ISI hub :D

The USA's consulate in Karachi exists for the purpose of representing the USA's diplomatic interests in southern Pakistan, just as Pakistan's Los Angeles consulate exists for the purpose of representing Pakistan's diplomatic interests on the US West Coast.

No consulate in the world exists solely for servicing the emigration needs of those people in the area around it.

And the Karachi consulate's non-serving of the public is a temporary measure, due to it being considered currently too dangerous to permit general access to the facility. Once it is believed that the a serious threat no longer exists, they will reopen it.

The Pakistani authorities have decided to cut down those trees because as the host nation for that diplomatic facility, they are obliged to take all possible protective measure to ensure the security of the facility.

hmmmm…yeah i guess u r right ms  but those trees… :frowning: i’m gona miss them :crying: i loved that road… :frowning: driving on that road wont be the same anymore :frowning: sigh :crying:

Pardon my outburst but DAMN!!! Thats is bad news, thats view looked pretty, espically in summer. But Irem reffering back to your post and to answer your question, uits most probbably due to security reasons, mabye a terrorist sniper could climb up those trees and take pot shots at the americans or other civilians. Or mabye they were concealing WMD? :)

The prob is that not only was it a shady street, but it was a shady street where shady groups could try and execute their shady planes :(

demise of good shady due to bad shady..

Re: How could they do this...?

this is what has happened to islamabad...most of the green belts have been purified from eucalyptus trees, which they thought were responsible for allergies...the trees are gone but the allergies exist...happens only in pakistan... :)

Yeah! every now and then the authorities here get bitten by some rabbid dogs and make some awful pointless decisions lilke this...theyve even started shaving down the Karsaz road which was one of the shadiest, greenest and thus coolest roads of Karachi and always reminded of the Islamabad Pindi highway.
losers!

Harris - the Karsaz road too ??? nooooo  what r they doing to it? :frowning: that was also one of my favorite roads in the city, havent been to that part of the city recently…sigh…
and also whats with their recent craze to plant palm trees all over the place? like in gulstan-e-johar? i mean, why bring in palm trees, spend money on them and then they dont even provide shade or greenery, they can plant some local trees too…i just dont get these ppl…

zaavia :smack: yup happens only in Pakistan :hehe:

Fraudia bhai, sigh…shady groups can still execute their shady plans even in the absence of the trees…i really dont think cutting off those beautiful trees is gona help

The_Deleted_One haanji you nailed it its prolly the WMD’s :hehe:

This reminds me of my visit to Islamabad few months back... I took a cab... my cab driver was a young Pathan Maulvi .... He said pointing to the left over tree-trunks "woh diakhoo kiya ho raha hay.." .. I asked him what happend.. his response.. "yahan par log raat ko chuhp kar zina kartay hain to government nay saray darkhat kaat dalay..."

dang it, its right by KDA1 :( i have such fond memories of that area..
its sad even if they have to do this for some security reasons.

A shame really...

i have a better idea, why the hell cant they move the consuate to near toll plaza. that way they can have snipers looking at like 3 mile radius all around the consulate and shoot anything that moves, and normal karachites dont have their lives messed up. cutting trees, to having trucking containers on the road is pathetic. move the damn consulate, its better for security and will make sure normal muslims are not killed in the cross fire between americans and Al qaeda.

not the karsaz road...that was my favorite road..i loved to walk along that when ever i visited karachi....damn it, my hatred for musharaf grew to like 1000 times just because of that act....

TM, moving to the the Toll Plaza's a greta idea. why should we pay for their security...?
dont hate Mush for this, he had nothing to do with it, it must be the JIs city nazim Naimatullah Khan who had the brialliant idea.

i love this place. it's the best part of the city. right in the centre.

apparently they have sent the lower officials who ordered the cutting of the trees to jail…and the higher officials claim to not have knowledge of this act…

what should one believe?

i was having tests and was busy with all the studies.
