i have grown up hearing this is prohibited. heard it is allowed only in a situation where one fears the sin of committing fornication.

I suppose the answer here is to not read threads like these. I mean, from the way in which it was written, when I read the OP I thought she meant doing things that make you feel empowered or happy like taking a bubble bath or looking in the mirror and self-praising or something lol I dunno.... I only realised what this thread was about after reading the subsequent posts!

You can disagree with the actions but not being able to have a candid conversation about sex is a huge problem in Pakistan. You can express your views without labeling things "disgusting".
While I do agree that almost every guy indulges in it, it's not a certainty. There's actually a forum on reddit for people who abstain from masturbation. What's interesting is that it was started by an atheist, meant to help people who were addicted to porn. Not everyone there is single, many people choose to abstain so that their partner is the sole focus of their sexuality.
On a related note, our brains are on a bit of an overdrive nowadays, with the easy availability of porn, movies, games, etc. Smartphones are probably the worst offenders. Some people make the claim that shutting the world out once in a while, and praying, meditating, or engaging in some other activity is great for recharging.

i think i ask the question in an appropriate manner. i don't find discussing how common it is as immodest. may be the act itself is immodest but how come asking about how rare or common it is or how many people have indulged in this can be termed as immodest or weird. don't we all discuss about things like adultery, cheating,lying,alcoholism, misbehaving etc etc then why only this seems to be disgusting??

I am not saying about you, but the fact is many people just dont take this act as normal even though they are doing it themselves. They can discuss sex between 2 people openly but not this act. Just like wives take it as a threat if they find out about their husbands doing it in those 7 days.

I dont think you will find any direct quote against it. I am 99% sure about it. There can be many arguments against it for sure but none prohibiting it directly.
As far as being allowed in that case of fear of commiting adultry, thats just like man allowed 4 marriages in some circumstances and under strict conditions, men just take it "men are allowed 4 marriages". Whats allowed is allowed. May be someone is in fear of commiting adultry every day, or may be twice a day. Who knows.

i agree,but this mentality exists in desis or to some extent in Muslims. the west is pretty much fine with this phenomenon and take this as a part of growing up.
