HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

was at a funeral recently and after tea, people got talking, and after this family left, everyone began talking about them, that the family live abroad, think india maybe, yet are still claiming child benefit and tax credit for there 2 children, they have been away for over a year.
now i have a cousin of a cousin, she also went to uae, for a year and carried on claiming benefits for he children.

apparently its common to claim even when away.

there this other woman who althogh lives in pakistan, claims some sort of pension benefit i think…her husband used to work in the uk nd died 2 years ago…but im sure they used to come every year just to get the benefit…i seem to remember ..not too sure though.

anyway the talk was that this is very common and nothing wrong with it…?? anyone know ppl like these…

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

Yes im sure it is common. If / when the government find out they take it back plus a fine and any property you own and you can go to prison too.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

I'm sure it's common, but it doesn't make it acceptable. I have no qualms about reporting such abuse of the benefits system to the authorities.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

Yes because if you cant stick it to "the man" who can you stick it to?

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud…

Why should a citizen of country be denined of benefits if they go abroad ?
Why is it a fraud ?
If they are working and claim unemployment benefits then it would be a fraud. No ?

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

Surely the question should be - why should a citizen of a country still be entitled to benefits when they are not even living in the country that is paying them benefits?

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud…

EXACTLY!^ The money could be better spent on citizens actually living IN the country. :smack:

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

If a person pays taxes in a country, then they should be entitled to benefits. But I hate it when someone gets immigration status and goes back to their home country and still claims benefits (unemployment, child benefits, etc). People work hard here for a living, and I dont want to be paying benefits for someone who is sitting comfortably far away just reaping the benefits by doing nothing. I know a few pakistani girls who have done this (get immigration in Canada, go back to Pakistan, come to Canada to have babies, register everything here, then go back to Pakistan but still collect child tax benefits). It really irks me!

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

I have heard a friend of my mother's who lives in Canada complain of the same thing!^^

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

F that man I would report people like that, I am a tax payer and this kind of stuff irks me.

If I ever knew of anyone like that I would report them, welfare fraud is haram money and its un Islamic. It also gives a bad name to immigrants in general.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

Yea, and legally they can't. There are certain requirements in order to collect child tax benefit. If they don't reside in Canada they can't. I don't get how people don't realize this is FRAUD and stealing. You don't have to rob a bank to be a thief.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

WTF? They need to ban Pakistani immigration.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud…

oho, just because we are all giving an example of Pakistanis doesn’t mean they are the only ones who do it :smack: In that case those who reside here wouldn’t have been able to move here.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

Exactly. For some reason, its the people who openly admit that they would report benefit fraud that are seen as the bad guys. Go figure.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

and what about the people who live and work in a country for decades, pay taxes, etc, and then retire to the "home country" and still collect benefits....that ain't fraud now is it.

If a Canadian citizen declares a non resident status then he/she is not entitled to any benefits LEGALLY.
I am a non resident Canadian I don't pay tax,I don't get benefits.
I am not even covered by Health Ontario unless I live in Ontario for 90 days.
But sadly I know people living in middle east who go to Canada get resident permit then leave without getting exit stamps. So in the system they are residing in Canada but they shoe no employment so they receive benefits as well as Citizenship without even living in Canada.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

thats not fraud, because you have paid into the system. You have worked for the benefits you are receiving. I am talking about people who never work a day and take advantage of the "free" money the government gives out.

But I dont think banning immigration of Pakistanis (as suggested by EDAL) is the answer either, because there are many many Pakistanis who immigrate here (the west) and work hard for a living. We cant generalize and say that ALL of them do it, because there are people from all countries around the world who also pull this fraud.

Re: HOW common is this type of benefit fraud...

My understanding was that it is illegal to do this, but maybe things are different in the US.
In any event, trying to justify it because you've contributed to the economy by paying taxes beforehand is a weak argument. Paying taxes is not a 'savings system' whereby the more you've paid allows you to feel its morally acceptable to claim benefits that you shouldn't be getting at a later date.
