How common is it for period to be late but not be pregnant?

Hi there,

In two days, my period will be exactly 2 weeks late. I went to the Doctor’s for a blood test when I was exactly 1 week late to determine if I was pregnant. The test came back negative.

I have absolutely NO SYMPTOMS of being pregnant. I have regular period for the most part. Usually every 4-5 weeks is when I get my periods. I have UNTREATED hypothyroidism. The doctor says its borderline but I’ve done my research and the doctor’s here are going by older standards and I definetly have hypothyroidism. Even with this condition though, my periods have been pretty normal.

For the last month I have been very stressed and cried a lot because I found out about 1 month ago that I have hypothyroidism.

What are the chances that I am pregnant? By the way, the exact same thing happened to me in December 2009. My period was late a few weeks and I had two negative pregnancy tests and then the third time I tested it finally came out positive but by the time I was told my test was positive I started having a miscarriage. It was an early miscarriage though.

I had no symptoms of pregnancy even back then. Is it common to not have symptoms of pregnancy if it will result in miscarriage? Is it because the fetus is not strong enough to make the mother feel sick or nautious because it will be miscarried anyway?

Please help…it is so hard to not know what is going on with me?

We have not been trying to have a child. I am being careful as I want to get treated for my hypothyroidism before I try to conceive.

No replies? So no one has gone through something like this????????

Ask your doctor that you'd like to treat your hypothyroidism. I was once diagnosed with it too, and it was borderline as well. I don't remember taking any drugs for it. But it went back to normal, on its own.

Don't worry too much. Periods can be late for no apparent reason.

Did you doctor ask you to come back for another blood work to check if the hormones have gone back to normal? Do that. Go back in a month or two (or call you doctor and ask when you should come back). In the meantime, take care of yourself. Do all the things necessary for a healthy body.

You are not trying to conceive right now, so there isn't anything to worry about as of right now. When you guys think you're ready, you can get checked then again.

One reason why periods can be late is you didn't ovulate. But you also mention that you've been stressed and that can delay your period too. I would test again with a First Response Early Result test. If that comes back negative then you need to ask your doctor to help you get your period- don't let it go on. They'll probably give you a progesterone shot to induce it and that should hopefully kick start your cycle again. It happens sometimes- especially if you're stressed out. If you find your doc isn't helpful, then I'd highly recommend finding another doctor who will be more proactive in helping you through this.

^That's very sound advice.
