How accurate is Ultrasound?

Re: How accurate is Ultrasound?

^I see, thanks. :)

Re: How accurate is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound for gender determination is never 100 percent. If its a boy and there is a clear visualization of the penis then it can be very accurate. But sometimes, it can look like a penis but actually be part of the unbilical cord. Or it could look like there is no penis but its actually folded over and not visible. The more experienced the technician, the better able they are to figure out what it is they see on the scan. And the newer scanners are much more reliable, especially the 3-d ultrasounds. The older machines are not nearly as clear. So accuracy depends muchly on experience of the technicial and the machine being used. The only way to know for sure is to have amnio or CVS.

Re: How accurate is Ultrasound?

whats amnios or CVS?

Re: How accurate is Ultrasound?

CVS is "Chorionic Villi Sampling", a fancy term for taking a needle-sample of the placenta for purposes of DNA study to see whether there may be obvious genetic malady and to determine sex. This is done between week 10 and 12 of pregnancy and is riskier than amniocentesis (about a 2 percent risk of spontaneous abortion as opposed to 1 percent risk with amnio). It is done vaginally so there is no 10-inch long needle to deal with. Amniocentesis is done usually around the 18th week so its done later on. Less risk. But a huge needle to deal with, inserted thru the stomach into the uterus to take a sample of the amniotic fluid. It gives the same results - sex of the baby and obvious genetic maladies. I couldnt deal with the needle so went for CVS with all 3 pregnancies. I just made sure to have it done by a doc who had 100 percent success rate, (ie., NO spontaneous abortion/miscarriage). I also found out almost 2 months earlier in my pregnancy that all was fine genetically which CAN be a big plus. Once you feel the baby moving, once it all becomes real to you, it can be much harder to deal with a devastating diagnosis and having to decide whether to terminate or not.

Re: How accurate is Ultrasound?

Is that recomended by doctors or its just ur own choice?

Sounds quiet comlicated and painful.

Re: How accurate is Ultrasound?

These are tests that are completely up to the mom to do or not. There is, of course, more pressure to have it done when Mom is over the age of 30 because there is a greater chance of troubles but again, its completely up to mom. CVS test is not painful at all and is done very early on. Its done vaginally so there is some social discomfort but no physical. The amnio is done about 2 months later and CAN be painful as they insert a needle thru the tummy into the amniotic fluid. Both tests give concrete results as to sex of baby and whether or not baby suffers from any of the more common genetic maladies such as down's syndrome.
