How About This Time?

What plans Pakistan has to deal with situation when US will leave Afghanistan.

Great question.

Now that Obama admn has given a schedule, every concerned party should be planning according to that timeline including Pakistan.

There is a best case scenario and off course the worst case scenario.

The best case scenario is that Afghanistan is stable neighbor and thus Pakistan can plan for huge increase in the trade with afghanistan. Perhaps the long awaited dream of linking Gawader to Central Asia will materialize.

The worst case scenario is that Afghanistan intellectuals will not show maturity and will not work with each other and Pakistan to create regional stability.

In that case Afghanisan will plunge back into the civil war, and Pakistan, India, Russia, Iran, Turkey, US and EU will fight their proxy wars and aFghan blood will be a cheap commodity.

Pakistan's own FATA will go out of control and thus turn into a center of terror and mayhem.

So now that you see both the best case and the worst case scenario, the reality will be somewhere in the middle.

And Pakistanis must prepare for a more bombings, a relatively chaotic FATA and we must be ready to sacrifice the precious blood of our jawans for the next 15 years if not more.

there is no set timetable for troops pullout. the given schedule is a guess, and concerns troop reduction (cost reduction) rather then complete pullout

its fair to say the original estimate of 30 years plus engagement in the region is the only reliable guide

re: How About This Time?

i wouldnt expect expect pakistan to have any plan, or clue, even if the US was pulling out next week

re: How About This Time?

Pakistan knows what to do when US pulls out of Afghanistan.. they managed it well back in 90s and they are going to manage it again, Afghan people are not mature enough to be governed by themselves, if Pakistan decides not to interfere ( which was the policy in early 90s) then Indian influence will grow, which is again not in interest of Pakistan, so Pakistan will support any Pro-Pakistan movement ( probably led by Pashtun People) and that will throw out the Indians out and shall secure that side of our border..

All we need is US+NATO to get out of there, this will bring down the grounds of any Talbanic-style movement in Pakistan...

very true ........... saray fasad ki jur is the presence of us and nato in this region. if they move out situation will be automatically improved.
