we are moving to Houston!!! so excited for the warm wheather and large Pakistani community!
Is anyone here familiar with the areas around mdanderson? Since my husband will be busy with work, I am incharge of relocation.
I need help with where to look for houses?
Good, safe neighborhood?
Names of good preschools? What is popular for 3 yr olds (private, Montessori, public?)
Mosques and imambargahs will be a big factor for where we move. I NEED my 3 year old to go to sunday school and learn SOMETHING Islamic. I have been forcing him to learn stuff for a full year but he laughs when I speak Arabic.
There are a couple of Md Andersons here. Which location will your husband be working at?
Houston is huge. Depending on the work location I can give you suggestions on what area to look at.
Since you mentioned Imaam Barghaas. I would look into Al Hadi school for Sunday school. I have heard great things about it.
As far as schooling is concerned it all depends on personal preference. We have great Islamic schools or private schools, awesome montessori schools & depending on what area you choose to settle in. Great public school districts as well.
Good luck for the move. We moved here a year & a half ago & just love it.
Re: houston, tx
welcome to both of you.
@pkgrl: Al Hadi is a great school. I like Sugar Land better to live since it has everything a desi wants. A desi area that is one of the best places to live in the US.
Re: houston, tx

Yup. Rabia was very helpful. No doubt about that. God knows I bothered her with so many questions.

Re: houston, tx
My sis is moving to houston to work for dawoo chemical … anyone help find her a apartment or room share in pearland area
Re: houston, tx
Pk girl, sorry i got really busy yesterday. So not knowing your budget here is a little information about housing around the Houston area.
Holcombe is med. center; the areas around here are great, but very pricey. There is west university, Rice, royal oaks, Bellaire and Meyerland all around the med. center. But the houses in these areas are in millions. You can find something old in Bellaire and Meyerland for around 500-800k. Bellaire has great school, some of the best in Houston. There are masjids in these areas as well but i haven’t been to them since i use the hospital masjid and they have a jummah namaz every Friday in a huge conference room (if you hubby doesn’t get the information once he starts here…pm me and i will send him the schedule.)
Anyways, i live about 15 miles from med. center. in Pearland…Shadow creek Ranch community. The community is about 8 years old and the areas around it are growing. The location isn’t too bad…about 15-30 minutes’ drive to desi places. We do have a new masjid. Here is a link for its fb group: Facebook . There is Sunday school at the masjid.
There are two Indian grocery stores nearby and a new Pakistani one is opening up. But we normally go to the Hilcroft area for desi grocery shopping…about a 20-30minute drive (but you will learn that in Houston a 20-30 minute commute is a normal things.) They are still building new houses in the area and they range from 300k - 500K and higher. But there are no Islamic schools nearby. Few of my Muslim friends drive their kiddos to Sugarland for Islamic schools. The main highway is 288, and it gets pretty bad in the morning BUT i take the back roads and get to work in about 20-25 minutes. Across from the freeways, i have friends living in Silver lake, nice but a older community.
I will be sending our LO to Garddard school. But on the silverlake side there is Silverline Montessori that we also visited and only reason didn’t pick it because they have the same vacation schedule as schools…meaning during spring breaks and other holidays i would have to pay for another person to watch him (a nanny.) One of our friends sons been going there and he and the parents love it.
Now to Sugarland…Sugarland is great, great schools, desi community is really large, desi stores and restaurants are all nearby, tons of masjids and Islamic schools are around. BUT do not move to the highway 6 area of Sugarland…high crime rates, and the schools aren’t the best of sugarland! Telfair is a new community and houses are 350k and higher. If you don’t mind an older house, new territory is great. But the commute for your husband will be at least 45 minutes to an hour, one way. :{
DO NOT move anywhere near 290…if you have to take 290 for work…forget it!!! traffic is a nightmare.
Har.com is a great website to look up houses in Houston.
If you need more information, pm.
Hope this helped!
Re: houston, tx
try posting here on FB:
Facebook ppl might be able to help. I live in pearland, but not very familiar with apartments.
Re: houston, tx
Oh Sugarland sounds awesome
I need to move there ![]()
PS Rabia, the Pakistani community … are there punjabis there too or is majority urdu speaking? Just curious.
Re: houston, tx
^wd…its more of a desi communtiy…indain, pakistan, hindu muslim, ismailies…etc.. Along with a lot of Masjids, they have Jammat Khanas too, and tamples.
I am not sure, but i know there is a huge sindhi community (they have conferences and stuff,) and i would guess there is a punjabi communtiy as well. I personally know few families ![]()
Sugarland is all right…i just hate the drive from there…my mom stays there.

Re: houston, tx
khattichic…i like you…so lets just stop this now. But i am jealous of the schools in dallas. Wish houston schools were a little better.
Oh i forgot to mention Harmony: Google Search
Charter school, owned and operated by a Muslim from Turkey… they serve halal food for lunch
but you would have to drive your kiddos to and from school.
Re: houston, tx
We have Harmony Schools all over Dallas and the surrounding areas! I have quite a few friends with their kids in various Harmony campuses. In fact, my son got accepted to one by my house for middle school, but I changed my mind and am keeping him in our public school for now
Re: houston, tx
Dallas does have some of the top high schools in the nation…but see Dallas stinks!!!
