Hotel Rwanda

Has anyone seen it? I’m a big Don Cheadle fan - and plans to watch it later this week..

Hopefully it will bring a little more attention/awareness to the situation.

Gosh...the trailer is really intense. Gives a real feel of the horrors of an unjust war.

I agree...
its definitely an Oscar contender...
and Don Cheadle does deserve an oscar, to say the least
he is the most versatile actor... and should rightly be rewarded for this effort...
eerily enough... it reminded me of Schindler's list.

He is up for a Golden Globe for his role. This movie looks like a hard-hitting drama.

Hotel Rwanda review

i saw the film a couple weeks ago. It's above average - Cheadle was good but has been better. The problem with the film is that everything is so obvious. The point is forced at you like a movie instead of just stepping back and looking at the event - the supporting actors were not that good. Nolte was way too broad here and not just because he's loud (he was loud in "The Thin Red Line" but perfectly fleshed out) - And there are plenty of caricatures, which drew laughter constantly. Another problem is that it's not realistic. There is hardly any violence. There was no terror at all. I'm not asking for a blood bath, but I think it's part of the depiction, even if you have to get an 'R' rating. And some parts of the plot are just meh. There is so much audience trickery here. For example...show someone's car turned over to get the auidence scared something has happened to a character...and then discover the character safe (as I expected)...characters making decisions to leave and then at the very last second deciding to stay and be a hero. There's so much more about the film I wont get into...you get the point.

This film is going to get recognition from people simply because of it's real message. But I personally step back from that, and the film by itself could have been a lot better. It could have had more dimension, been filmed in a more realistic manner, took more risks, etc. But you might go for it. It's happy, easy to understand, characters cry, it has a hero, and it's not too long. Good film all in all though. It's typical Oscar stuff, may get some nominations. It's not close to my top ten this year. If you want to be shocked emotionally and by good filmmaking see "Million Dollar Baby" (Clint Eastwood makes his Mystic River look average with this).
