What is actually needed in the hospital bag you take with you into labour and for after delivery. I have a basic idea that it should consist of some baby clothes, diapers, baby blanket, baby towel, breast pads, sanitary pads…is there anything else necessary or any advice from mums with experience??
Re: hospital bag - what to include?
You get EVERYTHING for you and your baby from the hospital. I kept just one small bag for me (my makeup, hair ties, bathroom slippers and a nice pj set to take pics in after delievery, I kept one homecoming outfit. For baby I kept just one nice homecoming outfit.
You get all your sanitary need from hospital. You won't use anything that we use regularly anyway. You'll need heavy hospital pads and stuff. They have mesh underwears. You can keep couple of your own in case you don't like the hospital one. They provide toiletries.
You get baby diapers, formula from the hospital too. I kept a small moisturizer for him because hospital won't use anything on small babies.
This is the stuff I had:
for me, a pj set or a nice rob, one good homecoming outfit, hairbrush, pins, hair ties, camera, slipper to match my pj set, a small makeup bag, my laptop (hey free wi-fi.. so why not), my own cotton underwears (didn't need it though).
For baby like I said, I only kept one good outfit and a small moisturizer. When I was leaving from hospital, they gave me 3-5 days supplies of everything for baby. Ready to feed formula, diapers, etc. My baby is 2 months now, I still have a box of supplies give by hospital for me and my baby which I didn't even use.

I didn't know the hospital provides so many items. Did you give birth in the UK? I heard we needed to bring sanitary items.
Re: hospital bag - what to include?
Oh I don't know about U.K. I am in the U.S Sometimes you have to ask for things. I asked for sitz bath and postpartum belt. They kept asking me if i needed more stuff but that's the only two I had to tell them I needed everything else, they had ready for me when I was leaving.

Re: hospital bag - what to include?
don't forget a loose pair of pants with a drawstring waist and a loose top to wear home esp. if you end up having a c-section.
and a size up in slippers/flip flops are a must. usually feet are so swollen, by the time you leave, from all the fluids they hook you up to, that shoes are impossible.

chapstick- when you breathe through contractions, its usually with mouth open and your lips can get quite dry. i got my epidural fairly early so i never ended up using mine, but the nurse who did our prenatal classes actually suggested this so i got a pack of bonne belle flavoured chapstick from Shoppers just in case.
lanolin is this heavy duty gel-like moisturiser for your nipples to prevent them from drying out/cracking if you are breastfeeding. you can get it from Babies R Us. the brand I was using is Medela. its fantastic and very soothing. it was recommended to me by a friend of mine who gave birth before I did and I was actually using it every night in the last few weeks prior to giving birth to prep my nipples. its entirely safe for the baby too, i.e. you don't have to wipe it off before feeding them but i wouldn't apply it just before the feed because it can make the nipples slippery and prevent a good latch possibly.
makeup- i thought i'd have a face fully primped too but after the 15 hours of labour and then the c-section, i was honestly SO exhausted and tired, i kind of just passed out. also at that stage, the only people coming to see you are immediate family. i didn't actually feel up to seeing any visitors until day 3 in the hospital, the day before i was discharged and even then it was just my cousin and aunt whom i'm very close to, and my bff. if you have a vaginal birth iA and everything goes well, then you might just be up for doing your face and seeing people but keep in mind with a vaginal birth, you get discharged from hospital the next day so most of your visitors would see you at home, i would think. in the end, it really is a personal choice- i had my makeup bag with me, i just never used it... keep yours with you and see how you feel.
as for a book/magazine, nope, there's no point unless its for hubby and even then, it probably won't be read. once labour starts, there's usually so much going on physically, mentally, and emotionally, the last thing you want is a distraction like a book or a magazine. or at least thats what i found. i was just very focused on the labour, and hubby was entirely focused on me.

so i take it there is no downtime? My mom told me that back in the day, she would stay in the hospital for almost a week after havign a baby. now like what SGC said, ur out the next day.
my sister says that on the next day, just tell the nurse tht ur not feeling well, and they might let you stay one more day lol.
Re: hospital bag - what to include?
lol at your sister.. everytime I have walked in that child birth center (usually for IVs) I wanted to run out of there.. I dun like their teeny tiny beds!!I need to roll around to find a comfy spot :D
Do they give you a full size bed after the child birth? just wondering :$
