Astrology. A belief that dictates that the motion of stars and planets affects individuals and events on our planet. I’m not talking about tidal waves.
Astrology has definetly transcended time, culture and even religion. In every faith a certain percentage of people can be found that do infact believe that a column in the newspaper can guide them on how to go about their daily life and what to expect.
Language itself has been (dare I say it) tainted by an astrological touch.
Disaster, from Greek, means bad star. The Italians believed that disease was the influence of the stars. It’s the origin of the word influenza.
I’m sure alot of people here do believe in the zodiac. My question is why do people still say things like, “oh he’s a taurus he’s supposed to be ________”, or " her ________ makes it obvious she’s a pisces"? Do people honestly believe that which constellations the planets are in at the moment of one’s birth profoundly affect’s one personality and future?
If that, why not believe that the white band of stars at night is infact the breast milk of Hera squirted across darkness of space (origin of the “Milky Way” Galaxy)?
Or is it a sort of subconscious need for us to have an apparent bond with the heavens? A personal connection with the universe? A cosmic significance to our lives?
Do you believe in horoscopes?
I’m putting this in life and relationships because people seem to believe their compatibility with another person and the behaviour of another person is affected by the stars. If mods feel this thread is better suited to another forum…well you certainly don’t need my permission to make that happen.
A thread inspired by episode 3 from the Cosmos series by Carl Sagan.
PT Barnum Effect. Horroscopes and personality descriptions are worded in broad enough way where they can apply to many people. One might "predict" that you had a "very turbulent adolescence"...well such a time period is often turbulent for most people. And people are more complex than their zodiac descriptions. I don't thing mine is a strong reflection of my personality.
If the najoomi sitting on the street knew what his horoscope contained for the day, he would know that we would hit him with a chali stick everyday and perhaps not sit there!!!!
Horoscope has quite broader and general descriptions, which is why large number of people tend to align themselves with their stars. It really does not tell anything though.
I don't believe in what they say.
I could write random ideas on pieces of paper and toss them around and pick a random one. That idea would be stuck in my head, and the more I tried to avoid it, something or other would happen that would lead me to think that that specific idea was correct. In the same, the idea that stars predict our future or what have you is hard for me to believe.
And the horoscopes that are usually given are really generalized. Just like the fortunes in fortune cookies, which I love because they're so nummy!! The statements are so generalized that anyone can relate any idea to their personal life.
Just logically its never made sense to me. Horoscopes are the barnum effect. That means that any one statement can apply to any person. You only one who decides your destiny is you. Youre the captain of your own ship.
