Why do they appear like that.
Is it the size of the squares or the placing?
After scrolling left to rt. and vice versa with my cursor I've come to the conclusion that they don't slope.
yes they are parallel, but why do they appear funky?
What's the trick?
It's a trick which reveals how your brain interperates visual images. Most of the time your brain only processes certain parts of the image and makes the rest up according to rules made from past experience. In this case the rbain focusses on the black and white squares.
When one square is above but slightly not in line with the one below, the higher visual centres of the brain interperate this as a prespective difference (one square is seen as if slightly further away from the other) which holds true during normal life anyway. hence the lines connecting the squares appear to be diagonal- following the line of percieved perspective. This is a neat trick used by the brain to reduce the processing needed of visual information, and also shows how the brain uses short cuts once it learns particular visual patterns and their implications in the real world.
Hence what we percieve (or 'see') is not what is actually out there- SEEING IS NOT BELIEVING!
Well, that's my guess anyway. Any other medics out there want to critically appraise my suggestion?

oooh oooh i know i know raises both hands in teh air
the black squares are placed a cm. off of eachother (top-bottom)...and not exactly under each other....this makes a non-straight column...resulting in an optical illusion...
