A group of white explorers are travelling through Central Africa. After days of travelling they get in contact with a new tribe. The people seem very friendly and welcome them into their village. The explorers want to communicate with the tribe, and much to their surprise the chief seems to speak English. The explorers decide to speak to the people of the tribe and tell them of their great plans, the chief will translate; the people of the village are gathered and with help from the chief, the explorers begin their speech:
“People, we have come from the civilized world; we come in peace and offer you the friendship of the great white race.” All the townsfolk smile and cheer: “Hoosanga!”
The explorers see the people are excited and continue:
“Yes, we come to take you out of the stone age and we will guide you into the modern world. You will benefit of all the great inventions of the white man and we will educate you and help you help yourself!” All the townsfolk cheer: “Hoosanga!”
“And we have seen the riches of this land; we see the land is fertile and rich in minerals. We will help you exploit these riches ands make the most of it; and of the profit you will make with our help you will be able to help yourselves and make your lives better!” Again the people cheer: “Hoosanga!”
When the speech is over the explorers are congratulated and the people go away still smiling and cheering. Now it’s time for a tour around the village, and the explorers are guided through the village by the chief: “here you see our houses, and here you see our fields where we grow our crops, and here is our tribe’s pride: our bull.” The explorers admire the beautiful bull, but the chief warns them: “Don’t get too close, or you might step in the hoosanga…”
