Honour Killing Toll Rises in Pakistan

What makes me Sick these stupid, arrogant and ignorant people have misled the meaning of Islam. Women have been to putting to death on the basis of **Suspicions for family and so called honor killings.

Something needs to happen, it needs to happen now before time runs out**

Pakistan’s main human rights body said yesterday that at least 461 women were slain this year by family members in so-called “honour killings” aimed at punishing behaviour deemed immoral.

The non-governmental Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said the 2002 figures - an increase from about 372 honour killings reported in 2001 - showed that women need greater protection. The government has made repeated promises to improve women’s rights.

“Crimes against women continued to rise this year,” Kamla Hayat, a senior official of the rights commission said.

Hayat said the number of killings could be much higher, adding that the group is still compiling a full report on crimes against women.

But Hayat also noted that the rise in reported cases may be in part due to family members or neighbours now reporting crimes that they would have ignored in the past, with opposition to the killings apparently growing in some areas.

The 2002 figures - and the 2001 total - came from reports in two provinces, Punjab and Sindh, Hayat said. She said the commission lacks resources to operate in the provinces of Baluchistan and North Western Frontier Province. That they are not included in the report suggests the number of actual killings in Pakistan is higher.

Most honour killings are carried out by husbands, fathers, brothers and sons to protect the “family honour.”

According to the commission’s figures, out of 161 women in Punjab state, 67 were killed by their brothers, 49 by their husbands and the rest executed by other family members. In seven cases, sons killed their mothers.

On November 11, a young woman was hacked to death by close relatives in Faisalabad on suspicions she was maintaining “immoral relations” with a man who also was killed.

Also in November, a widow was killed by her brother in the industrial city of Gujranwala because the brother suspected she was living with a man outside marriage

Rise in Pakistan ‘Honour Killings’

At least 461 women were killed by family members in Pakistan in 2002, the country’s independent Human Rights Commission says.

**So-called “honour killings” are up by nearly 25% on last year’s reported total of 372, its latest figures show. ** :disgust:

The commission urged greater protection for women, and said at least as many had been raped as killed in the last year.

Most honour crimes are carried out by men who believe their actions will defend the reputation of their family.

In the southern province of Sindh alone there were more than 300 honour killings, the report said.

And some 161 women or girls were killed by relatives in the central province of Punjab.

There were no figures for the rest of Pakistan where information, particularly in rural areas, is often difficult to obtain.

**Awareness

“Crimes against women continued to rise this year,”** senior commission official Kamila Hayat told the Associated Press.

She says the commission lacks resources to operate in some of the most conservative areas of Baluchistan and North Western Frontier Provinces.

Commission officials say the number of killings could be much higher, as they are still compiling a full report on crimes against women.

Officials also said the rise in reported cases may be partly due to better awareness among family members or neighbours who are now coming forward to report crimes they would have ignored in the past.

In June this year, the community-ordered gang rape of Mukhtiar Bibi in Punjab triggered national and international outrage.

**Laws Changed **

In that case, six men were convicted of attacking her and sentenced to hang.

But in most honour killings, those guilty are rarely punished.

“Unfortunately, police in Pakistan either don’t arrest such killers or they are not treated as murderers,” :disgust: Ms Hayat said.

The authorities, however, say steps have been taken to reduce crimes against women.

“The government has recently made some changes in the laws to give more protection to the women,” :k: Javed Iqbal Cheema at Pakistan’s Interior Ministry told the Associated Press.

**But human rights activists say more needs to be done. ** <–Panchyaat Justice System :smack:

“We need collective efforts to save women from brutal crimes,” :k: Ms Hayat said.

Very informative, thanks for sharing.

This is disgusting.

The sad thing is our idiot johnny come lately mullahs keep harping about the "westernization" of the country.

I mean look at it this way, so they have an issue with some people who like to wear western clothes. maybe dance a bit etc etc.. these mullahs call it a moral decay.

but what percentage of population are we talking about. a small portion of the population ins some of the large urban centers.

However, i dont see teh same idiots blast the tribal, idiotic, practices in our villages and throughout society that has nothing to do with what they consider "westernization"

Terrible news, Musharraf did do a good thing by outlawing honour killing. What I hate is the hypocricy of it all, if you punish people for izzat, whya ren't men punished? Zina is haram in Islam, but we never hear men punished for it.

Zakk,

To be more accurate, Honor Killing has been part of the culture of Pakistan, though, no one accept it and has been widely rejected by the people of Pakistan. But reality is reality. No one can do anything about it no matter what steps we take. The Panchyaat Injustice System has ruined the women. It was even common when the Brits used to control Sub-Continent for instance like Brits don't use to go to FATA. More to that, no matter what Musharraf or next Govt. does, isn't going to stop, not in this world.

All these decisions have been made by the Panchyaat System, which Central Govt. of Pakistan can't do anything about it. It was before the birth of Pakistan and it is still present.

National Geographic Website has a story about this..

Older story..but graphic.

Pretty Horrid actually.

Don't search for it if you are weak of heart.

I watched that episode on National Geographic Channel. It was horrible and heart-breaking.
