Have you considered Bali or another Indonesian honeymoon spot? It would be different and definitely not as expensive as Maldives.
I would argue the cost of a Maldives honeymoon actually IS sky-high... but sometimes you get what you pay for.
Also, I'd recommend planning the trip yourself....its more fun that way, I really enjoying planning out my honeymoon with my husband.
Agreed....Malaysia does have more diversity in activity. Maldives for example would not have huge shopping centers in comparison to Malaysia. My husband and I did mostly water sports, cruises, relaxing, swimming, and spa stuff. If you want something more 'busy' then Maldives wouldnt be for you.
As far as the length of the trip goes, I dont know how someone based in the West could afford to take 3-4 weeks off of work anyway. Youre one of the lucky ones, I think most people, regardless of the price of the location, can only go on their honeymoon for about a week.
I havent seen a lot of pictures of Malaysia honeymoons and I'm sure there are tons of possible options there, but my friends pictures were sort of "ehh." At least, it seemed like there was a big difference between my maldives honeymoon and their malaysia one, but then again, it might largely depend on how nice the resort is. A five star in Malaysia would obviously be better than a so-so hotel in Maldives, and with the prices you mentioned, Malaysia sounds like a steal :)
Well, I haven't actually been yet but my helpers showed me all the good spots. There's a lot more to do than just shopping.
There is a wonderful little island (one of many, it's all about the time of year if you want blue, blue seas), it just has a handful of water villas and a honeymoon package (including spa treatments, snorkeling etc etc) only sets you back £100 per day. This is if you stay away from the one's that are geared towards western tourists and resorts.
And actually, in the UK we get 20-25 days paid holiday per year, that's 4-5 weeks. People aren't averse to taking an extra unpaid week for wedding and honeymoon either.
Sure, if you've got the money and want that kind of experience, go for Maldives or even French Polynesia.
Most people I know go to Seychelles or Maldives and they had a great time but it didn't seem unique to the place.
Also, I mentioned in another thread that if you can splash out now and think this might be your only opportunity to go for such a place as the Maldives, you might regret it if you don't go for it.
Malaysia will always be there and it's cheap enough that it won't be difficult to holiday there later.
i'A I will still be going to Malaysia this year but my dream place is now somewhere else where I can have the island experience, mountains, skiiing, ancient buildings... except it's really expensive which i hadn't anticipated. anyone want to guess!
