Honda issues global airbag recall

**Honda is adding more than 378,000 cars to an existing safety recall in tyhe United States for air bag inflation problems, the firm said.**It broadens a recall announced in late 2008 for less than 4,000 Accord and Civic sedans, and expanded in July last year to cover another 440,000 vehicles.

The company said the airbags can deploy with too much pressure, causing injury.

Just last month, the Japanese carmaker recalled 650,000 cars globally to fix a switch defect that could cause a fire.

It comes as Toyota recalled nearly half a million hybrid cars over faulty brake fears, just months after the same carmaker recalled millions of other vehicles amid accelerator and floormat problems.

Meanwhile, Honda’s airbag defect has been linked to 11 injuries and one fatality.

Honda said: “We cannot be completely certain that the driver’s airbag inflator in the vehicles being added to this recall at this time will perform as designed.”

This recall will apply to 2001 and 2002 model-year Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V and 2002 Acura TL vehicles.

The company says owners should take their vehicle to an authorised dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda.

Last month Honda recalled 646,000 Fit hatchbacks worldwide because of a glitch that could cause water to enter the power window mechanism, causing components to overheat.

The car is known as the Jazz and City in other countries. That recall affects Asia, Latin America, Europe, South Africa and North America.
