Homo Milk

How long can homo milk last at the room temperature? and how long it can be consumed if its kept in a car cooler?

Thanks

Re: Homo Milk

homo milk :cb:

As for your question well I do know that if I ever leave milk out overnight it stays ok. Never experimented with a longer duration. Have no clue about the cooler thing.

Re: Homo Milk

thanks Femme.

I have tried to find the answer but i haven't been successful.. in the baby books and sites they mention only about baby formula milk but not the homogenized (3%) storage and usage.

Re: Homo Milk

Qrius.,...milk is sensitive n goes bad easily if room temperature is high....
The easiest way to check if its still ok or not is to boil it. If it gets a full boil its ok but if the curding begins before reaching the boiling point, its not good anymore.

This is not meant for baby/formula milk though!

Re: Homo Milk

If you have a big and good quality car cooler than you don't have to worry about anything. Just keep a budget of $10 for every second day for 4 ice bags and you will be fine with Milk and food.

I took a cooler filled with solid 4 bowls of ice that I kept in freezer for 3 days. When I came back from QC after five days, we still had some small ice pieces floating in the remaining water. We drained water every day (it was very little amount though) that helped ice integrity for longer time. The temp then was b/w 15/21.

What you can do is to have 4 big bowls frozen in the cooler when you leave, along with Milk and food and drinks. It will last 5 times longer than the ice bags. If your trip is longer than you can add ice bags every other day. Its a good strategy for this months temp 21-30. Milk will be safe as the temp inside cooler will be around 1 to 5C at max.

Re: Homo Milk

thankyou Afia and Smooth_Guy for the helpful tips.

I read somewhere on a travel site that the milk can stay ok at the room temperature for a day..that person was travelling in europe though.

Afia, is it possible to use the milk if it smells ok? like how people do backhome? i am not sure if i'll be able to boil the milk too often..for formula milk they say to consume it within 4 hours at the normal room temperature.

Smooth_guy: do you have any experiences with the small coolers? because i do have experiences with the big ones and not the small ones and i want to buy a small one this time.

Re: Homo Milk

I have a thermos size 4L cooler that basically came with the same big cooler I mentioned. Its either Rubbermaid or Coleman. So you can say its an average cooler. That thermos can keep ice cubes as is for more than 24 hours easily in trunk.

A mid size cooler in car's trunk can keep things cool for 2 days, given you have filled it with ice and have 40/60 ratio of food(incl milk) and ice. If one is taking ice away from the car and opening it too much than temp increases inside the cooler drastically, resulting in icemelt in extreme summer conditions.

For milk its proven, if you keep milk bag in cold water (not even ice), it won't go bad for 4 days atleast. The temp must not be above 5C though.

For the brand, I will recommend you Coleman. If you are just interested to keep milk safe exclusively, then go for Keg cooler type of products that are made for moms going on long vacations. Check out canadiantire.ca and type keyword cooler.
