Homemade Yoghurt

Hey fellow Guppies,

My mother used to make homemade yoghurt from near-bad milk. Does anyone have their own recipe for making creamy homemade yoghurt?

Boil two cups of milk (vit D or half and half), pour in an empty plastic or glass container, when little bit hot then add 2-3 heapful table spoon of yougurt in it mix well, close lid and place inside the oven (turn on the light of the oven), in summer it will ready in 12 hrs but in winter it takes more time.

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

yeah jias got it right my mom used to make it to but u have to make sure its a glass dish otherwise i don't think it works or the texture might not be right!

well, I use plastic container most of the time, I usually made yougurt to make kerhi but for smooth texture I use glass dish.

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

This is how my ammi always made it.

1- Bring milk to a boil

2- let it cool a bit

3- pour it in a glass/plastic dish

4- add couple table spoons of yogurt

5- Put it in the oven over night

Someone else I know would keep it in a cabinet in the kitchen and that worked too.

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

Why would you make it at home to begin with?

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

Thanks guyz for the recipees - ill try those. Sara, simply to be creative in the kitchen and be proud that you made this yourself and not shop brought. Is this a crime?

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

The way its made in our home is you donot wash the container of yogurt, instead just add milk to it, cover it and leave it overnight.

In the morning it'll turn into yogurt.

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

^thats how my mom makes it. we hardly ever buy any from the stores because my mom's always turns out so good.

Chill out--I was just wondering, is it supposed to taste better or be healthier for you than store-bought yogurt? thats all

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

definietly get the yogurt machine. it will come out so nice.

Im sorry. I am just a bit pissed off with some certain forum members from another thread and now I am 'on my guard'. Yeah, home made yoghurt tastes better - a lot better. BTW, isnt there a way of making it without adding a dollop of store bought yoghurt?

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

bunneyhunney you dont need to add the store bought yogurt, Dont wash your yogurt container after the yogurt is finised and add milk to that.

The bacteria from the yogurt will turn the milk into yogurt overnight

Ohhhhhh OK - Good idea. Thank you :-)

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

My question is how do you get homemade yogurt to have the same texture/firmness as the store bought one like dannon. Also can you flavor the milk with say vanilla after boiling it and setting it to make yogurt overnight.

I don't think you can, it's always kinda runny comparing to store bought yogurt.

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

chk out this site, it’s got some good info

Making Dahi (Indian homemade yoghurt) - Homemade Yogurt - tribe.net

btw i heard that u can add gelatine to the yoghurt to make it firmer, not sure as i’ve never tried this. add 1 spoon along with the culture to the milk.
also adra’s suggestion is really good, my mother told me the same.. after 3-4 batches ur homemade yoghurt will taste better coz u’ll have a purer bacterial culture if u do it this way.

afrosheen, i read that u can add honey or sugar to reduce the tartness, i guess u can also add flavouring. interesting.. i think i’m going to give it a try!

adra, after i add milk in the yogurt container..do i put in the refrigerator or oven for overnight?

thx.

^ u put it in warm place.

Pectin is used to give texture, one of my friend use one cup vit D and one cup half and half and make dahi she says it is better and less runny than as normal we made. It doesn't the same as readymade.

Re: Homemade Yoghurt

same you just leave it on the kitchen counter or if its freezing than the oven overnight.
