Homemade Sewing items

Please post pics of things you have sewn or altered. Hope that some GS 'ers have tailoring skills.

Re: Homemade Sewing items

I do sew, on and off, depending on my mood/time available etc…Don’t really have any pics though, i think. I used to sew for all my sisters in my teen years…then it changed to making frocks and dresses for my daughter. Now I don’t really sew that much, apart from some home projects or mending/altering stuff.

My 9 years old has just had her exams and is free these days…I was thinking of giving her some starter’s embroidery lessons…atm she is more into learning cooking, though. let’s see what we eventually do

Re: Homemade Sewing items

great idea!
I did that with my daughter. Started her with embroidering on a frame when she was 5 years old. She managed to finish her monogram and got a good handle on what is required.

Then I taught her how to hem. She’s pretty good at that too now.

Last year she learned how to crochet. She finished a small throw and has now moved on to patterns.

When she turned 6 we got her a small sewing machine that she could learn on. Now she’s practising on my machine. She’s just turned 10 and I’ve been thinking about teaching her how to sew an outfit now…

Good to see someone like minded!
I feel lucky that all this stuff really excites my daughter and she jumps up every time I hint about cooking/ crafts/ baking etc. both of us look forward to quality time spent this way. And this often gets some contribution from my youngest daughter as well, who just turned 5
I like to crochet myself and I think that’s another brilliant idea. Thank you!

Muzna - your blog inspired me to open this thread. What a great idea to pass skills that we learned from our mothers to our daughters. Cooking and Sewing are necessary skills for girls to learn.

Re: Homemade Sewing items

can I do that with my son ? He is SO SO keen on cooking and baking already and loves to try with stitching because he got to see his dad doing stitches on his cousins and other badtameez kids with cuts on forheads/chins. I tell him silaii ka kaam larkay nahin kartay and he argues baba bhi tau kartay hain ? :smack:

Re: Homemade Sewing items

**Yes please do teach him. Your bahu will thank you one day **

Proto… I taught my son cross stitch.
And you know, I really try to pass on all skills to my sons and daughters alike  believe it or not, my boys are more interested in this stuff than girls…

Re: Homemade Sewing items

ammi taught her boys to sew…in fact, when I was younger and needed the waistbands on my pants taken in (cuz I was tall and skinny), I recall my brother doing it on the sewing machine, not ammi.

a skill is a skill and I would hesitate to “program” a child’s mind in any particular way unless there was a fear of him/her facing repercussions.

Thank you Twinklestar for starting this thread. I’ll be sure to come back here and post pictures of what I end up sewing in the coming weeks and months in shaa Allah.

Re: Homemade Sewing items

How does one learn to sew? Is it easy to learn as an adult if you’ve never ever ever done it?

Re: Homemade Sewing items

It really isn’t that difficult Sara, but it can be tedious and repetitive.
Can you sew by hand?
Have you any experience running a sewing machine?

I really do want to learn how to sew. Many times my outfits don’t fit properly and costs me a small fortune to get it altered.

Sadly, the kids these days are so engrossed in iPads, laptops, YouTube that they don’t have much interest in acquiring these skills. I guess the adults are to blame for this. Many of us don’t want to take the time out to teach these skills to younger kids.

May Allah bless all the mothers who passed down these valuable skills to their children.

Try taking a sewing course at Michaels or a local high school or college that has continuing education.

YouTube has tons of great videos and can a great tool of learning .
