Re: Home schooling…pros and cons?
Moodie is right. As a parent, I feel like it’s my responsibility to teach my children how to be strong/self reliant and confident in any situation. Be it a school yard bully, colorful language learn and heard or antagonistic co worker. They will come across many situations where they have an unfair boss, client, neighbor etc…these lessons learned in school going years carry through an entire lifetime IMO. I don’t believe in sheltering to that extent. My view is that children will only make a big deal about tough subjects if adults/parents do. My eldest is set to start 6th grade/middle school, and alhamdullilah, he’s managed to get through elementary school without learning to curse, be bullied(or bully anyone) nor get wrapped up in boyfriend/girlfriend drama. Same with my twins. I am fully confident that from here onwards, middle school to high school, my boys have learned the tools neccesary to keep their noses clean and walk the straight line.
Situation #1—homeschooling failed because the family bit off more than they could chew. They purchased curriculum and tools from online resources but the mom was not a teacher. She tried it for 2 years (after having her kids in a Montessori school previously) and when her kids went back to public schools they were so behind on their academic levels, she had a to pay a private tutoring center to catch them up (reading levels and math)
Situation #2—homeschooling is working fabulously because the family is a part of a home schooling co-op,that consists of other children, outside tutors and a “classroom environment”, structured sports leagues and art/music classes. Basically, it’s set up like a traditional school but outside the confines of public school.
