Home-made wax

I know there are multiple threads on this topic already, but I couldn’t find the answers I need there. If someone could help out, I’d really appreciate it.

I’ve made wax at home twice. The first time I made it, I used white sugar. This time, I used brown sugar. Also, just to make it clear, I’m not interested in making the sugaring/halawa wax, I want to make hot wax that I can heat in the microwave and then remove using bukram strips.

So, here are my questions:

  1. It was really really hard to figure out when the wax was done when I used brown sugar. What is the easiest way to tell when it’s done?
  2. Several YT tutorials say that the wax is done when it is 260 degrees on a candy thermometer. Is this the right temperature to make the kind of wax I want to make?
  3. I’m using the following recipe- 2 cups sugar with a quarter cup each of lemon juice and water. Is this the correct recipe to make hot wax?

Could someone please help me out? Thanks in advance…

Re: Home-made wax

Can I ask why you want to make this kind of wax at home when there are some great ones available that will remove even short hairs?

Re: Home-made wax

Hey, i also wanted to make wax at home, and i searched the recipe yesterday, but its says 1 cup if white sugar with quarter cup each of water and lemon. Does using more sugar make is more sticky? i want to know as well, as i will be making it in a couple of days.

Re: Home-made wax

Yes, you can. :) I haven't had great experiences with store-bought waxes before, and as weird as it may sound, I do like making my own wax. It's cost-effective, and it works well, especially because I have extremely tough hair that grows back very quickly. That's basically it I guess...

Re: Home-made wax

I bought a small wax heater, it cost me about £20. And professional waxes that range between £5-£10 (depending on how high quality and short hairs it can remove) a tub that last quite a while.

Just a thought if you can't make the mixture you're after consistently.

Re: Home-made wax

Would you mind telling me where you bought it from? I heat it on a radiator and it's the most annoying thing ever!

Re: Home-made wax

^Lol! Just a sec..

I just lost the post I wrote. GS is so stupid sometimes.

I bought the Hive Student Starter kit about 3.5 years ago for £45. It’s now £75 except one place where I found it for £45 but it was trade only.

Everything seems a lot more expensive now. Just Beautifully used to have a lot of small wax heaters at reasonable prices.

This is the one that came with my kit: http://www.thebetterwaxingwarehouse.co.uk/product.php?productid=270&cat=22&page=1
This website has an 800cc one for the same price too.

I started buying my waxes, strips and spatula’s from ebay power sellers.

Re: Home-made wax

I think I will be able to do it IA. And in any case, I don't mind giving it a fair try before I give up...

So, anyone with answers to my questions? Pretty please?

Re: Home-made wax

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier holy moly. I think that adding more sugar does make it stickier. Most of the sites I've checked out specify the same recipe I wrote. If you use just 1 cup of sugar, maybe you'll end up with the sugaring wax...? I'm not really sure.
